Actually, the car being RHD has nothing to do with it being illegal. There is no law forbidding RHD cars in California.

So lets say that a cop pulls someone over with a stock RHD drive car. If the guy has valid registration and insurance, is there anything the cop can do? I'm not saying its a 100% legal car, but would the average cop cite the driver for anything other than what he might have pulled him over for?

In a nutshell it's the fact that cars from Japan do not have the same safety regulations as those here in the US so they need to crash a few to make sure they comply with the regulations.

Technically no. But it will certainly draw more attention. It might cause him to be more suspicious and possibly lead him to send you to a referee of sorts to check VIN numbers and history.

Headlights, reflectors, bumper reinforcements, glass and smog equipment are a few of the things that need to be changed.

I know all of you are enjoying this little debate but this is an easier fix then everyone has stated yeah the car is only worth about 4-5 tops but, if your really interested in getting it legallized this is what you do. Buy a shell no motor clean or salvage title doestn matter. You buy this car JDM and all. You use the paper work from the shell you just bought and transfer it onto the JDM car. You take it to the state ref and you info them you have done a JDM conversion which is totally legal, and they change they make the VIN# match up again and serial # match up again and check for all the smog stuff and check emissions. My frieind did this a while back with a del sol. Bought a salveged shell for 300 bought the JDM del sol for 1700 and took it down and had it all changed. If you all care for my input.

I wonder if this was the same rhd fd that was hit by a semim in an intersection that many on this forum have seen the video of.
Might explain why it is primered.
If that is the case, I know that car was legally registered...illegally.

aside from the welded on chassis vin plate this sounds like a spectacular idea!

and it's totally illegal and even a crappy rolling chassis FD is $3k+, plus the guy with the fine and possible jail time may come looking for your blood.

get the **** outta here.....

Nope doesnt sound very leagal at all. Long story short it can be done it has been done and it will continue to be done. I honestly could care less what you have to say to me think your going to hurt my feelings over a post lol. And honestly its no more illegal then getting your car illegally smogged which I know a great majority do. Or anyone who has ever put a (track use only ) part on there car or eliminated their cat. honestly chill out.

twomucboost4u, please stfu. Yes, our cars are modded and illegal, but worst case scenario... we get a ticket or get the car impounded. Swapping VIN's is a federal crime. Idiot

Go to Japan and set up permanent residence there. Legally change your name to Yoshi Tanakagawa. Live in Japan forever and enjoy your JDM ride. You become really ghey like twomuchboost4u and keep telling people about how "smart" you are. Twomuchboost4u did this a while back with a del sol and he's still ghey and pround. Bought a salveged shell for 300 bought the JDM del sol for 1700 and took it down and had it all changed. If you all care for my input.
