Just got my car registered in Cali. Bought it in michigan. DMV will have to do a visual inspection when you bring your car in to register it. Get it smogged then you are good to go.
If you're a AAA member, then skip the DMV and go there instead, the lines are much shorter. AAA DMV services can do almost anything regarding vehicle registration.
Note that there is a fairly short window in which to register the vehicle in-state, if the date on the form that asks when the vehicle entered the state is more than 21 days ago (I think it's 21), then they'll charge you a penalty fee. The date of sale does *not* have to be within 21 days, just the date that it entered the state. When I did this recently, the car spent 3-4 weeks sitting at the seller's house waiting for the transport to show up, so the date of sale was significantly earlier than the date it entered CA.
