clear coat question

Quick question

Is there a way to add more clear coat to a car without having to repaint the area?

For example, get a brand new car from the dealer, and you want to add more clear, is there a way to do this? Or do you have to repaint the whole car and add clear right after painting?

Any shop should be able to add another coat of clear. I can't see why they wouldn't be able to.

yes. clear coat is basically just a seperate layer that protects the paint and gives it more of a glossy look. my buddy put a extra coat of clear coat on his brand new CF hood since the layer it comes with usually doesn't last long.

Yup, you could just add more clear coats. You just have to sand the car with fine sand paper.

wouldn't sanding down the paint give it that "scratched up" look? if you add more, then the clear coat would just add a layer of coat but wouldn't you still see the scratch marks?

Yeah i'm aware of what it is, but once the product is finished and dried up, you cannot just add more clear as it'll chip off, neither will it stick to a smooth surface.

Clear coat itself won't add more gloss, you have to wetsand and then buff it out to make it glossy.

No, you have to sand it, or else the clear wont stick. It's just like if your color sanding. I would sand it with 1000 grit before applying any clear coats or higher just to be on the safe side. At work i usually do it with 1000 grit.

sand it with 1000 grit with water make sure you dont press just braze over the car, also keep in mind to go in a cross hatch pattern dont go with the lines of the car go in a angle

have the car prep before the clear goes on, after that sand down your clear coat with 1500 grit then 2000grit with water again , then use 3m polishing compound and buff your clear coat back out

The reason you sand again after your clear has been layed is because you get that orange peel look if u dont, wetsanding the car after clear helps to smooth out the clear coat thus creating that super gloss look

You could just sand it down with 2000 grit to buff it. If this is your first time buffing, i dont suggest you do it, you should get someone that knows how to buff.
