So whats the smog exemption rule now?
You should have brought up the point that you wanted to convert your automobile's exhaust to a catalytic converter and remove the thermal reactor so as to "improve fuel efficiency and improve exhaust emissions", however you cannot because you will fail the visual inspection when it is time to get the car smogged.
May or may not be true, but they won't know.

that said, what is so good about toyota, their just as shady as the big 3 a few years ago, their cars are falling apart.

vietnamese owned smog shop in business was shut down by BAR via sting operation. place was called "LUCKY AUTO REPAIR & SMOG" after the owner was sent to prison for doing illegal smog checks on vehicles, his brother took possesion of the property and re-opened it 2 weeks later doing the same illegal smog operations under a 'new' name called "LUC AUTO REPAIR & SMOG"

For just getting a state ref ticket? There must have been more to it. My friend has had at least 3 state ref tickets. The cop even put a sticker on his car once that said he could not drive until it was inspected. Each time all he ended up having to do was pay the $300 ticket that comes in the mail if he diddn't want to deal with the ref inspection.

Feather - I JUST last week tried to renew the reg on my 7, I got a notice in big bold red flashing font - WE CANNOT RENEW YOUR REG UNTIL THIS VEHICLE PASSES EMMISIONS.
So I started asking around and haven't found anything yet. Let me know what you find. I'm 4 years away from being excempt but am more than willing to pay the $660 in "repairs" to get the emmisions waiver.

Guess what, due to all the people that live here in Cali we have really shitty air. And we are violating FEDERAL Clean Air standards. One of the many methods of coming into compliance is to make it so that any new car sold in Cali meets more stringent rules governing emissions. 6 other states have voluntairly joined forces with CAli to fight the EPA.
I'd rather breath clean air than worry about your car. Grow up.

One of the many methods of coming into compliance is to make it so that any new car sold in Cali meets more stringent rules governing emissions. 6 other states have voluntairly joined forces with CAli to fight the EPA.

I cannot follow your argument flow...you start off saying that workers make $30/hr, marry, make more dough...then spin off about taxing oil (it's not), bush running up numbers (uh, what?) and then Arnold and his smog laws...mean what? Do you not read the news? The fact is the worldwide demand for oil is up and production is near stagnant. When there is more demand for a product and less of it to go around price goes up. Compound that with the fact that most of the major exporting countries are hostile to the US that market swings can occur. The Shieks aren't taxing the oil anymore...it's just supply vs. demand.

And as I said before, Cali has to increase air quality standards to meed Federal guidelines. Current Federal emssion standards aren't tight enough for Cali to meet it's obligations. Which means it has to do more across a broader sector. Did you know that wood burning fireplaces may be banned? All that particulate matter collects to the east of the coastal cities. Cali implmented low-sulfer diesel to clean up the semi trucks and is pressing ahead for better stack scrubbers...
If American companies aren't selling the cars american's want to buy, then why should be purchase a lower quality product that won't make us happy? Detroit has done with with pickups though.

Our problem is the shithole known as TJ. Their rigs run up here after topping off their tanks with cheap dirty diesel in Mexico. Although that is being addressed...they may have to dump/refuel w/ cleaner american gas and have stack scrubbers on any mexican trucks running in the US.
ANother issue is cruise ships than run on fuel or bunker oil. The idle in port and they dump tons of **** into the air. San Diego is no where near as bad as the LA basin and I"m damn glad I don't live up there.

I think the problem isn't with emissions law per se but rather the targeting of vehicle modification.
Hell we need to get a ******* Proposal on a ballot ... or something.
Engine swaps, engine modification, should be perfectly legal so long as it passes a sniffer test and said modifications will not be a gross threat to other motorists. Now that last part could be vague. When I think gross threat, I think maybe, say driving around a car powered by a huge tank of unstable plutonium that is mounted to the rear bumper. You know, something really kooky.
Seriously the car enthusiast/tuner crowd has to be large enough to where a proposal could be passed that would allow exemption for making car modifications so long as they meet emissions requiremens/pass sniffer tests.
