California emissions/ vehicle specs
This is for the Cali peeps, theres a good chance we might be moving to California next summer(wife is from Cali and wants to move back). Wondering if you guys have a link for me to see if my 7 is in specs for the state. I heard some air intakes can be illegal iun Cali, is this true? Is there any specs on how low you can have your car also?
Any info is appreciated, Thanx.

all aftermarket intakes, and cat forward exhausts are against the law unless they have a CARB (California Air Resources Board) exemption sticker.
as far as low, no part of the car may be under the sidewall height of the tire. So if your tire is 1" tall, you can have a lowered car that is 1.1 inches at the lowest body point.
And off to the west section, where this thread belongs

sorry wasnt sure where this would go, "cat foward" do you mean catback? Isnt my car to old to worry about this stuff? Vermont has 1997 and up laws for emissions, therefore my car is exempted here.

Even the so called exempt in our State, i believe is 75 and older, correct me if i'm wrong still has requirements. What most don't know is even being in the exempt status does not mean you can remove any smog equipment that the car came with. That means if you had a car that had an egr valve or smog pump in the exempt years still has to have the equipment on it. It just means that you do not have to go thru the emission testing. It is a old law that rarely would get enforced but it is still on the books and enforceable.
And new to all in other States. Beware they have it on the books to change the emission laws in ALL States to comply as Ca does. This is supposed to start in the next 2 years and then be in full enforcement by 2010.
my solution is to keep my Vermont registration in effect, renew online and have my parents foward the stickers to me in cali. BTW I would only have to do it every 2 years too. That should do it.
it might work for a while but i have been pulled over in a car with out of state plates by highway patrol for no reason other than for him to ask why the car was in the state, being one state off isn't a big deal but driving around with plates from half way across the country expect to be pulled over sooner or later and hope they buy your story.

There are several different laws regarding the lowering of your car. You can find all of the California Vehicle Code at this link.

Cali, is very harsh, and eventually, you will end up popping your hood if you get pulled over. Even if your car appears stock from the outside.
The good news is, at least from what I have seen, that you can just pay the fine, and not worry about correcting the violation.
An acquaintance of mine just got pulled over in LA for tinted glass. Other than that the car appeared completely stock. The officer had him pop the hood, and proceeded to write him up for smog modification violations. To make a long story short. He paid the fine of $500, and did not have to go to a referee.
The license plate thing will work, but you better have your story down when they pull you over. Know the laws, and answer accordingly. I had Texas plates on my FD for 2 years without any problems.

Im from ontario in soCal and the high way patrol has put out radio camercial saying that if your car looks modified in any way you will be pulled over.
And also that cat forward law has recently changed from what this cop told me when my friend was pulled over in his SI civic. he told me that any modifide exhast system is ilegal. unless he just acting like an ***. but he gave him the ticket and he had to get a smog for that ****.....
**** is hell of gay.

Generally as a rule unless the modification has a CARB sticker the exhaust is not supposed to be modified. But changing the muffler does not constitute modification of the exhaust. It used to be on V8 vehicles if it came with a single pipe and you added duals that was a violation if the car was not of the exempt years.
What's completely ludicrous is that even if you tuned your car to pass the emission portion of the test but had a non-Carb header and modified induction system your still in violation when it comes to the equipment portion.

Jesuscookies, was his tint just too dark? Because they did change the law to allow side windows to be tinted as long as officers could still see inside.
And has it really gotten that bad in So Cal about targeting "Modified" looking cars. Are they going to pull over a 911 porsche with a widebody turbo kit, i Don't think so. Or some exotic
lambo or ferrari? If this **** is happening and the only reason they can come up with is that
it "looks modified". Then i think that their eventually looking at a discrimination or even harrassment suit.

For awhile Nor-Cal was safe until FF3 came out then Nor-Cal started to crack down on modified cars. I had friends that got pulled driving a stock car and made them go ref which was really a waste of time and money. My other friend who owns a wrx that just have an HKS BOV with a CARB sticker and the cops just ignored it and still wrote him up for having illegal intake and car too low even tho he dont have an intake and still riding on stock setting suspension.
