I like that better and the cop would have to call the insurance company co verify they're still insured. As a common scam is to sign up for 1 years worth of insurance, then after they get the insurance card with a 1 year expiration date they CANCEL THEIR INSURANCE. And keep the card.

Unless you have a DUI where the insurance co's are required by CA law to notify DMV immediately when you cancel ins.. Apparently car insurance price goes up with those and people wanna save some dough.

Yes, exactly. My roomate works for a car insurance company so I get the scoop.

As to the smog check, I'd pull over before the stop, tell the officer I'm having engine trouble, and have to call AAA, then tow me across on a flatbed, they can check the tow truck all they want...

Don't think it was a joke as meant to be another one of his friendly why old schools are better nudges in the ribs. Besides, the only way Wack, uh, OldSchoolMel might actually hit that Ferrari Enzo is if he was behind that rust bucket of his pushing it. To be a threat to the environment and Ferrari's, it actually has to run.
I will say your Tow Truck idea is a seriously good ounce-of-prevention play. Another reason to have a fuel pump kill switch installed as well as be a member of AAA.

. it is a fact that you got to pay to play. well in this case, smog rules and your excuse may work if the cops are bunch of idiots...thats just an old lame excuse. When you see them rolling smog machines, it is always within less than a block away and most of the time, you cant make any turns.so how much do you pay for insurance??? arm and a leg I bet, just in case you roll it eh???

No I have a similar provision, I don't drive it much, and it's a secondary vehicle. It costs me very little, somewhere around Full Coverage @ $432, which is still more thank your junks, but it doesn't look like father time is driving a rusty cat food can around either.
As to the AAA someone needs to take the but plugs out of their ears, I said pull over, because you can't make a U turn, and play if off like you car stalled in the traffic or rolling up to it, have a kill switch where when you turn the key everything seems fine but for mine, the ignition coils don't activate, so no spark... and you can show the officer that it won't start, and you need a tow truck...

I talked to the roomie and got an update. When anyone cancels their insurance, the insurer is required by law to notify DMV. DMV cancels registration on the car within 30 days of receiving notification.
So when their plates are run by the copper and come up 'no registration', they get pulled over for that and busted as well for no insurance. Mandatory 30 day impound, costing a minimum of $1200.00 for impound fee and tow. Plus fines and points on license.
CA does have random checkpoints for drivers license and DUI.

On January 2, 2010, the Escondido Police Department conducted a DUI Sobriety / Drivers License Checkpoint at the intersection of East Valley Parkway and Bevin Road from 6:00 PM until 1:00 AM. The emphasis of this checkpoint was to detect intoxicated and unlicensed drivers as well as to provide a highly visible operation to deter driving under the influence.
The following activity resulted from this checkpoint:
- 2,666 vehicles entered the checkpoint
- 1,481 vehicles were screened in primary
- 53 vehicles sent to secondary (drivers who could not produce a drivers license or who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs)
- 3 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- 9 field sobriety tests were administered
- 29 vehicles were impounded at this checkpoint, 8 drivers did not have auto insurance, 5 drivers had a suspended drivers license and 20 drivers did not have a drivers license
- 48 citations were issued at this checkpoint
The above listed checkpoint was a part of the Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign. During the campaign, the Escondido Police Department conducted two DUI/DL checkpoints and three DUI saturation patrols. The following activity resulted from these combined events:
- 11 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- 30 field sobriety tests were administered
- 48 vehicles were impounded
- 143 citations were issued
The above statistics are only representative of the specific DUI enforcement activity. The arrests and citations generated by routine patrol operations are not included in these numbers.
These checkpoints and saturation patrols are operated in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol, San Diego County DUI Probation Team, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the North County Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Council.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

^--hah, Good idea. Since my battery is right behind me passenger seat, i could quickly yank the lug off, and shrug when i try to start it.
But i bet you $100, they will give you a ref ticket if you try to pull that. They'll be like, "ok, tow it out of here, but take it to the ref station by so and so date."

maybe we should have a bbq, I will place all 3 RX-3s on jackstands for your inspection. I will take a shot of vodka, tequila or any hard drinks you have in mind for every rust you find. but if you dont find any, you better swallow or take it up your ***. fair enough???
