AZ arizona guys. emissions

i may be relocating to Phoenix early next year and was just curious how strict emissions testing is there. because both of my 7's dont stand a chance at passing(we dont have testing in SC) is it one of those if you know the right people you can get by, or you have to make it pass? thanks in advance guys!

Emissions is very strict out here. The sniffer is actually more strict in many cases than California but the visual is very easy. The smog stations are government run so doesn't matter who you know, no getting around it.

The one thing you can do is get collectors car insurance, it has a few rules like mileage restrictions, can't be your daily driver, and such but it allows you to register without emissions.

Otherwise maybe if you know somebody out of county you can register there but if you get caught who knows what might happen.

emmissions

Tom are you serious because I am relocating myself to phoenix maybe. However, in cali I do not worry about my two rotaries because they do not need smog. So, i should just get rid of both the r100 and repu.?

AZ smog stations are government run?! I had no idea! From the sound of Tom's post, AZ smog testing is worse than CA's.

They have some out dated machines. Register your car somewhere other than a major city and you can get around it.

If you can get away with it you're fine. Just realize that no idea is full proof and anything illegal you do you will run the risk of getting caught. I don't know how severe the consequences will be if you get caught, or even if there will be any. You may want to rephrase your questions into more of a "what if I get caught?" manner. I know of nobody on these forums who has gotten caught doing these acts, but I have seen more than a few say that they're currently getting away with it.

If you're working here and the AZ Department of Public Safety officer pulls you over commuting TO or FROM work, you technically only have a very short timeframe to get your car registered in AZ. Many have been known to stretch the truth, but it only will get you so far before you need to decide what to do. I went the "Classic Car Insurance" route, which is the best way to go, especially if the car is a hobby car and not your daily driver.

Most insurance companies offer a collectors policy of some sort. Just call your agent and ask about it.

The main sticking point that the State looks for is that the face of the actual Policy must say Collector Car Insurance or something similar. You need to bring the actual copy of the policy with you to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when registering the car. If you're company can not provide a policy that states that on the cover, find another carrier. If the state will not accept the policy, ask them why not, and find a carrier who meets their criteria. I've never heard of anyone being rejected as long as the policy states "Collector" or "Collectible" car insurance on the cover. Good luck and let us know when you get here. One of our club members who drives a yellow RX-8 also works at Palo Verde. Stay in touch!

For "classic insurance," go to Hagerty.com. Each of my RX-3 has a full coverage $300/year, its all worth it.

Dont waste your time with AAA, I first went there but after a week of going back and forth with documents and such, it turned out that they have no classic coverage for old school imports, just domestic.

I was going to say if you were military you can have your vehicle registerd in another state legaly, cause i had to do it when i was stationed in VA, but had my car registerd in prescott, AZ, Did you find out if USAA does anything like that, cause it sounds like a good idea.

Question CA vs. AZ emissions requirements?

Not trying to sling mud, but what is the basis for the comment about sniffer being more strict than CA? Do you have a sample rotary car emissions log from AZ you can share? Just to see what the numbers are like... looking for NO, CO, and HC, and the rpm at which they're measured at. Here's mine from last Sept 2009. It's for a '93 FD.

Wow mdpalmer, you just scraped by on the NO especially at 25mph. 4 parts per million is pretty darn close.
