little hose thingy coming from the air cleaner

so i'm looking at my car today, and see somethign peculiar that i haven't caught before: that little hose that's supposed to come out of the air cleaner is not connected to the air cleaner at all - it's just plugged with a bolt.

first off, what is it that this hose connects to on the engine? also, what could this mean?

Gonna have to be a bit more specific than that but is it supposed to connect to a thing that looks like a vavle or something on the inside of the air cleaner? Might be the altitude compensator... its probably plugged cause when this goes bad the idle gets bad...

yeah - that's it. how much would a new altitude compensator cost?

What type of engine we talking here? 12a I'm assuming, from what you guys are talking about.

If it's the hose that is supposed to connect to the metal plate thing on the inside (metal plate looking thing is the idle compensator). on the air cleaner assembly (bottom right?)

Details..please

If your cars running fine and passed emissions and idles fan than just leave it plugged... all the little emissions doo dads are expensive to replace and most arent even sold anymore...

the car does idle a little on the rough side. i wonder if fixing that will smooth it out.

I have been so may of our cars plugged by bolts because someone did not know how to fix the car right and just plugged the hole to fix the problem. It sounds like the Idle comp to me. I would take it to a rotory shop if you could and have it fixed right. As much as people like to fix there car as cheaply as posible, We should try to get them fixed correctly when possible so that they will last longer. I can take some more pics under my carb it it will help ya isolate the problem.

here's the outside of the aircleaner with the plugged hose:

and here's the inside, it looks like the highlighted hole is where the hose connects to, but i could be wrong.
