You win...
I've spent the past week or so in deep meditation, thinking, considering, planning, and doing it all over again. After weighing all the options, even though it kills me to do it, I'm going to have to say goodbye to the rotary. I'm going to the junkyard as soon as my clothes are out of the dryer to look around and price LSX motors with 6speed transmissions. Some questions, though...
If I sell the 13BT and such from my 87 Turbo II and sell my 86 base model, do you think I'll be able to afford to do it? Tax returns are coming back also, so theres another $300... Also, whats the average length of installation on one of these swaps?

One more thing, I've noticed the ridiculous price difference between the LS1 and the LT1, is the difference worth the money? i know the ls1 is aluminium and like 50lbs lighter than the lt1, but how major are the performance differences?

MAJOR differences. my friends LT1 camaro (stock) dyno'd at 271rwhp, when my friends LS1 camaro (stock) dyno'd at 305rwhp. if you mod the LT1, it can match up to the LS1, but you'd need some serious money. if you can, go with the LS1, power possibilities are at a greater stance if you're working on a budget, go with the LT1, but if not, go big. LS1. mine's almost done hehehe. but the LS1 will run you about 3,200-5,500 depending what good of a deal you get. i got mine for 4,800 shipped on ebay, but the LT1 is WAAAAAY cheaper. the T56/LS1 package is kind of hard to come by since everyone out there wants it for their projects.
the lengths of installation usually depends with the receiving of the parts you're going to need. if you are free all the time to work on this and you have all the correct parts AND if you did your homework, then i don't think it should take you longer than maybe a week/week and a half. it's all just a matter of waiting for parts to get there. goodluck on your project man.

LS1s are better engines overall, no doubt, with better internals, MUCH Better heads, and better ignition stock.
Also, you dont need serious money to make power with a LT1. 350 whp is a cam swap and headers away (with a tune) and if you do something with those heads (porting) or get new ones, well, Im sure you can imagine how much power youll make.
The whole v8 'scene' (if you could call it that) is definitely great to get into. You wont have any regrets! Personally Im going with a 2.3T because its literally DIRT cheap, and at this stage in my life I cant help but have to cheap out where I can.
But, well, that said, when I come into some money you bet your *** Im getting a LS1

lol
Do the LS1 and LT1 use the same motor mounts? Like if I were to get the LT1 now, and later when im not so broke, i get the LS1, would it be a much easier swap?

Okay I just got an idea.
Would it be wiser to A) sell my base model 1986 and use that money for the conversion on my TII, or B) sell my 1987 Turbo II and use THAT money towards the conversion on the 1986 base model.
Indeed the 86 is lighter, but the driveline is also weaker...what do you guys think?

considering you'd have to ditch the tranny anyway there'd be no difference in the drivelines of the two cars (except your base wouldn't have a LSD. but you can probably pull one out of the 'yard for cheap). You'd have more money if you sold the TII and the performance would be about the same in the end.

Ah, I forgot about the brakes. Yeah I think im gonna sell the 86...but idk how much i can get. The school i got it from painted it this horrific blue with a shitty silver-black fade stripe. What do you think, like maybe $1000?

If you have anymore questions, the best thing to do is go to www.torquecentral.com under V8 Rx7. Try using the search button, you can find all your answers there.

My advice: convert the TII. I really wish I could have found a TII to convert. It would have saved me the trouble of going through this 5-lug/LSD swap. I'm still waiting on brake rebuild parts.
Depending on the 86's condition, you could get a good amount for it plus the TII parts. I'm guessing you could up to $3k for all that? Save a few paychecks and you'll be able to get a decent LS1/T56 combo. Good luck man.
