well.. a plane v8 just wasn't enough :)

i've had the v8 in my 83' mazda rx7 for a good while now and it's been awesome. it's already pretty damn fast for a street car, but i knew the second i threw it in there i would eventually have to boost it... and ofcourse it would have to be done using a form we all know doesn't work: blow thru AAHAHHHAHA! anyways, a quick tidbit of info.

350 sbc
home brew 650 holley dp
weiand xcellerator intake
custom log manifolds, all vband, T6 flange piping
T6 GT42 turbo (1.16 a/r hotside)
4" downpipe and exhaust which will dump at rear axle
and a bunch of other blah blah stuff i'll update on later.... here's some pics of my first good test fitting (still have old carb on and other stuff that will change)!!!!

2350 and it's fast enough as is... but ehhh there's always room to grow LOL! i've trapped 90mph in the 1/8th all motor. not bad for only having headers and intake

i can't wait to see what i trap with the new setup, hoping to get above 105mph in 1/8th and 125+ in the 1/4 WOOHOOOOO!

Looks nice. Ive played with draw thru/blow thru carbed turbo set ups before. Are you plannig a manifold referenced power valve? You may also need a 4 corner idle ckt. I also have modified the holley base to use air pressure to seal around the throttle shafts. Otherwise once it hits boost you have fuel spraying out primary and secondary shaft bushings. Best way to control enrichment is with a adjustable cartech FMU....most arent adjustable. Maybe you already know all of this. Im in High Point N.C. and also have a V8 FB if you ever want to get together and talk shop let me know. If you need your carb modified I can also help you with that, took me ages to get mine set up correctly. In the process I learned a lot specifically on holleys. Anyways good luck and hope to hear from you.

i appreciate it bro, but i'll be alright. i've built and tuned more blow thru setups than i care to think about right now hahaha. i ran a holley on a turbo 12a for a while actually because the nikki just wouldn't make enough power carb's and boost were meant for each other woooowooooooooo! sealing the throttle shafts isn't neccessary, but is pretty easy to do. i personally don't even bother. never had fuel spray out on me except for the nikki carbs. they love to bleed fuel, but i found a fix for that as well. hell, off topic but yea man maybe we can get together one weekend or something. i dunno how far high point is from mint hill.

oh and the cartech fmu's are great, but the latest stuff from aeromotive is muuuch nicer

Gotcha, I dont know where mint hill is either..lol. Im new to the carolinas. Im glad you know what your doing carbed turbos can be a major PITA to get right. I also played around with a 12a turbo ...draw thru set up. It was tough to get it working right in a street engine. It would run ok...soetimes hesitate and then without warning accelerate like a bear and nearly rip the wheel from your hands.

Oh forgot...my current project car is a 1982 Rx-7 with a 1995 LT-1 in it. I cant keep the wheels from spinning as it is so no turbos for me...yet.

hell yea, wheel spin is just something we have to live with. i have bfgoodrich drag radials on a set of 15x8 wheels in the back and it lights them up thru 3rd no problem. so i figure adding a turbo will just make things ummm better... yea that's it... yea

isn't torque fun?!!!

Torque is my new best friend. I see a lot of guys doing a V8 conversion of some sort lately. I think more guys are seeing our cars and realize its the way to go. You just cant beat it for, cost, power output, reliability and of course the fun factor...ohh and turning major heads with that V8 sound coming from such a small car. I use to have every honda/acura integra driver wanting to race me at lights on a daily basis. They dont bother me much anymore hearing that big engine and watching the car as I accelarate away. Ive owned a few RX-7's and rebuilt many rotaries,I just wish I did this conversion earlier! Oh Im just outside Greensboro if that helps. looks like you have quite the RX7 business there.

i wanna see how you can fit a DP big enough to not choke the engine. Can you get some pics of how much space you have in the engine bay?

damn your car looks nice man. i like the header panel setup, i was going to do something similar but now my radiator is all up in that area so it would look retarded hahaha! i take it you checked out our website? i don't own the place, but i'm 1/3 of the company if that makes any sense it's my second home LOL

stuffy, i will have to get some passenger side pics from atop the bay. you'll see how i'm going to run my 4" downpipe. it will be tight, but will work just fine WOOHOO!

Thanks, that header panel was a major PITA to build. It works great ramming cool air into the radiator though, think its what helps me run at 195degrees and never overheat. I did check out your website, you guys carry a lot of hard to get stuff.

so far i have never had a cooling issue, i run a 160degree thermostat and while cruising or hard driving it stays there.. the only time i start to run hot is at idle but i'm sure its because my little 14" plastic fan with the shroud not hardly covering it may be the issue hahaha.

that's all changing tho the best thing you can do is keep that undertray. do you purposely run your car at 195 temps? just curious

Yea the stock thermostat is 195 degrees. If I buy a aftermarket one thats 160 I have to adjust the PROM in the ECU. Reprogram it basically....which I avoid like the plague. Since its a LT-1 any modifacation usually involves messing with the ECU and $$$$$$$. Now before someone argues there are "some" things that can be done but nothing too extensive. Im using a summit "black magic" cooling fan with a built in shroud. This thing is huge and covers 95% of the radiator and moves a ridiculous amount of air..something like 3500 CFM. So far it can idle all day in the direct sun in the high 90's and it stays right at 195. I ended up building a stainless underbelly tray to direct air from the airdam and under the engine. If you stand next to the car with it idling and the fan kicks on you can feel it. The hood scoop is actually a air exit path. Im also using the old mazda oil cooler with racing beat adaptors on it converting it to -10 AN hose. The fan also covers part of the oil cooler. The radiator is a stock mazda unit 3 row version. Your like 80 miles away which sucks....I could come work for you on the cars I know and love!

aahah oh yea, i need to downsize them. i'll try to get them up tomorrow after work. its tight but completley do-able (sp?)...

custom: i think i know the fan you speak of, i was going to use it but have absolutely no room for it so now i'll be using the dual 10" low-pro fal fans. should do well enough i hope. only time will tell. and it's good to hear that your in love with the car as a car... most people don't understand when i say that. they wonder how i can work on rotaries every day and then have a v8 in my personal 7. i tell them i love the car and they don't always get it. when i get this sucker back up and tuned i am going to try and setup another rx7 meet and maybe you can make it out. would be nice to have a few v8 rx7's out to show people it's not such a bad thing

p.s. good job on using the scoop as an exit path, don't want that dead zone of heat with nowhere to go. i am doing something similar, but going to try a couple different air routes thru the bay... then again my setup is a little different.

lol, that's really the low goal i've been around a few blow-thru v8's and on this turbo most see around 650 - 700rwhp at 10psi. that is WAY too much power for this little car hahahha. 500rwhp is gonna be over 500tq

i can't keep traction with the drag radials in N/A form!!!! this is gonna be fun WOOWOOOO!

Nice FB. I like the wheels and how you deleted the side mouldings. Here's my FB. Next time I paint it (after the 5.0 H.O. swap) I will lose the side mouldings.

Oh I'm motivated it's just that I have two off-road projects already in the shop taking up all my room. That and three kids kinda makes it hard to get anything done. I can't wait to see some of those vids. That thing is just gonna be sick!
