I like power. I like RX-7s. I've got a rotary motor that's going in a GXL this weekend, that's gonna be my daily driver. I had a lonely '86 Sport sitting around with no motor, and managed to find an LT1 for $300. Anyone else see where this is going? For about $2000, I can have 450 to the wheels. There's no way I'm gonna pass that up.

Just Do it!!!

Don’t listen to them. They Flame me all the time. I am building soon Stainless steel Manifolds for 12A’s for the people who do for cheep and soon 5.0 & SBC turbo Manifolds.

The whey they all talk they think a V8 RX7 sucks in handling. Then they have never driven one, EVER!!!! I will be at Valley River Center at the Autocross and there will be LS1 V8 RX7 car there. I am taking my camera . For all those people out there that Want to feel what a V8 car feels like. Go to a dealer and test drive a older C-5 corvette 1995 on up. Then they will know what where talking about!!! All so, after your done you can drive across the states with your new motor all the way to Florida and put your toes in the white sands for Spring Brake = ) Watch all the hot girls walking around. Hahaha and still get too hotrod all the way back home. Try to do that with a Modified T2 car that’s pulling
300hp and up.. The flake I get…Geeee I really don’t care. Really. I am going to set up my V8 RX7 for drifting and Auotcross and Not with the Stock Wheel width size…way over.
Sorry that people on here are Dorks. Go with a V8 really. The smile will not come off your face. PS Put in a roll bar after your done please. My friend Ross died in his RX7 up by the Dam where I live. OKAY? I will send you a email.
Rotary...Ha!

LT1, $2000, 450 to the wheels? HMMM? Better lower the HP figure , or increase the dollar figure.

I'm so sick of hearing weight distribution given as a reason to not do the swap. Please tell me where the weight distribution is skewed. Check out my thread here where I weighed my car after the conversion.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=274368

Only about 60 lbs heavier than stock, and the gas tank wasn't full. Distribution was about 51:49, and it might be better than that, but that's as accurate as we could determine the weight at the front and rear axles.

Newsflash to anyone swallowing the 50:50 tripe. It changes the minute you get in the car or fill the tank with gas, or run the tank half empty with gas, or run out of gas, or swap in a new radiator, new intercooler, etc. If you run a passenger in the car that's extra weight. Yet no one bitches about destroying the 50:50 distribution by taking their friend for a ride.

actually the 50:50 is calculated with a full tank(like curb spec) and a driver. i'm not sure the size of the driver, but i'm sure it's an 'average' size.
i hate driving with other people in the car, it sucks. my car is slow enough as it is

That's $2000 for the engine work, not $2000 for the whole project. I'm budgeting about $5k for the swap.

and fwiw, the 50:50 debacle is in regards to the rx7's (and miata's) differences with other cars built in their time. the avg car has a 60:40 distribution and understeers like a tractor. i don't think an educated person would sit there and scream:

oH NoS!!!1!! mY tEh wEighT DistRibuTion HaeV tEh bRok3N!!!one!

Anyone that thinks that you need 50/50 weight distro to handle well must be totally ignorant of the fact that the Porsche 911 is the most winning car in sports car racing.

Always a interesting thread...
I am going to be test driving a 86 GXL RX-7 with a 350 V8/swap this weekend...

Heck, I have owned a BUNCH of RX-7's and I can't wait to see what one feels like with a V8...

I LOVE sports cars and love tweaking & modding...
Like it was said earlier...Its HOT RODDING!
Very American!

MY TURN

I am Still laughing about the guy saying that the only reason for doing thje V8 swap is because you dont know how to work on a rotary. Witch is super funny cause how many vlaves to you have to ajust in a rotary?? NONE. how many degrees do you set your cam in a rotary??? NONE because they dont have valves or cams. when push comes to shove the rotary is a more simple design engine.
I'm not knocking it, i like the engine, But I allso like gobs of tourqe.
So why be a hater, everyone makes their own choices and there is not a damn thing you can do about it.
Deal with those choices and move on.

Check this out.
I own a 91 S5 with a SBC 350 in it
a 86 S4 with its stock rotary in it
a 86 B2200 pickup that i am going to swap a 13B INTO
a 94 Z28 Camero stock

So Since I am pretty much equal with my small engine to big engine ratio does this mean I have a standard size *****?

No, but you may be experiencing the lopsided ******** syndrome, where you have a large one to help your v8 needs and the small one for other engines. I think it would be interesting to put a rotary in a mini cooper, or a Fiat of some sort.

To think of it, that kind of makes sense.

personally i dont know why people bother with v8 conversions because the austrailians have proven that 5-600hp is relaible and half the cost of a v8 engine work wise, over here that is,with many a 9second quarter mile rx roaming the streets in oz,fully street registered,my 2c.i hate the thought of a v8 in a unique car like any rx.

how about this, you go build a reliable, streetable, daily driven 5-600 hp, 13b powered rx7. when you do, get back to us with all receipts it took to get there. some of you people live in a fantasy world...

That's funny, because we hate when the water flows down the ******* counter clockwise. Many 9 sec rotary street cars in oz, maybe you should stop reading the tuner mags and get a grip on reality, or a better stopwatch.

I am always confused when people say that an Rx7 with a V8 is not an unique car...How many people own a Rx7? how many people own an rx7 with a V8? Doesn't being a subset require that it is more unique??

Yea really, I have to agree with you. A N/A V8 is alot more reliable then a turbo rotary. There is no argument...

Have you considered dropping it into something a little less sacred? Like a Supra perhaps...
On the other hand, go ahead and install it in the 7. Because the more people who do this, the more my rotary-powered 7 goes up in value.
haha, i totally agree with you.

BTW TOUGHGUY - (Rotary Engines)"Were not built with enough displacement to compete with big american engines." hmm a true comment coming from a true idiot. Mazda never intended to compete with american muscle you moron. The cars were built to be affordable sports cars that would out handle just about anything on the road. and if u look at a Vipers preformance on curves. u might as well just buy 2 ton truck.
Moron? Is that all you got? You must be a result of the public school system or did your mommy marry her cousin? Really though, taking a statement out of context and name calling is certainly no way to assert your intellect and symbiotic presence on the board.
Hmm... all of 19 years old and already you know everything? Let me ask you. Have you even driven a Viper? No I didn't think so! I have! And I tell ya, it handles a whole lot better than my old Integra, RX7 and my 7 series BMW put together. It has as much torque as all the above and is a true enthusiast's car. Ahh but mere words are all but lost on todays youth as they no longer listen to the wise and instead formulate opinions based on other misguided missives posted on some thread and then proceed to spread said judgement by TALKING OUT THEIR ASSES! Congratulations, Viper=2 ton truck is very advanced algebra for a child such as yourself. Unfortunately for you, no matter what side of the V8 fence they may be on, I think the majority of members on this forum are having a laugh at your expense. To avoid embarassment in the future, maybe you should have your parents proof read your post next time unless, of course, they're as stupid as you!

when you spend 80 grand you better handle better than a civic/7/and beemer. put 315s and wishbones on any tub and it'll handle well.

If you want to buy an RX7 just to put a V8, it'd probably be more worth your time ot buy a car with an SBC V8 in it.

My friend rebuild two saab T3s, welded up some manifolds and stuck low compression heads on his 350 chevy small block, which resides inside a Jaguar XJ12. He's in the process of looking for an XJ-S and he's chucking the V8 in favor of the origional V12.

If you're that much into engine technology you might want to punch "Dynacam Engines" into your computer.
I don't see anybody talking about aviation here. Your point is...?

How long has the 911 been around? Porsche has had more than enough time to iron everything out. The RX7 wasn't designed with this in consideration.

probably from a supra

If I had the money, I would just buy a 240 and put in a skyline six. (RB26DETT I think)
How origional. If I had the money I'd put an S2000 engine in a 240.

No offense taken or apologies necessary. Just a heated but friendly disagreement on engine preferrences. Of course I'd never actually install a 20B into a '68 Mustang thereby de-valuing it. Sure I'd get to see the priceless horrified looks on the v8 guys' faces, but they'd have the last laugh when they realize I'd just pissed away half the cars' value + the cost of the conversion. I'd therefore chose a car that has no classic value for this conversion instead.
I would be dumb and crazy enough to buy a priceless concours-quality '68 Mustang, a Mach1, Yenko Camaro, or a '69 Z28, or a convertible Hemi with matching engine and chassis numbers.
I would be dumb and crazy enough to sell the engine to someone building a Cobra kit car or part the engine out and sell the block for scrap.
I would be dumb and crazy enough to install a very ported, very built 20B with a very big turbo.

They'll have the last laugh of course. I'll just pretend I don't know English.
