V8 rx7 good or bad?

I must let you know before that I had a 86 n/a. I got into a bad car accident and have since build a v8 with 500hp. It is going in another rx-7 that i bought after the accident. I personally like the rotary but when it comes right to it, its hard to be the cost and reliability of a v-8. I have 500 hp and mine isnt even blown yet. I was wondering what is the most hp anyone has ever squeezed out of a s4 or s5 engine. If anyone wants some pics they can email me since i do not know how to paste them in. My email is joep@iastate.edu

I know I will get flamed for this, but I agree with you.

Nothing can create power like a good ol' V-8. You can buy the short block for next to nothing and build it up relatively cheap. Plus, you usually get some better advanced warning when something is getting ready to blow.

I had no warning about my motor throwing a rear apex seal last summer. I was driving 50 mph in 5th gear when she popped.

I actually plan on building a V-8 RX-7 in the future, may convert mine over if I blow another engine......

If this is a special use vehicle i.e. drag, knock your socks off. Otherwise, the one I rode in handled poorly. Took half the fun out of the car.

I remember a guy who swapped a V8 into a TR-7 (I know its a old car), and had fun for the first few days then wondered why he spent the $$ shortly after. Kind of like Xmas, can't beat the expectation yet can't deal with the disappointment once the excitement wears off.

Just my $0.02 worth

Alot of people pop their motors doing this, having it almost WOT in a high gear for the speed creates alot of stress on the motor. I know someone whos FD would knock just cruising in 5th gear, but wouldnt if he was getting up on it.

Drifter101 07-01-03 07:04 PM

Meh, i bought the rx7 for the rotary and the handling, i think a v8 would ruin 50% of my fun even if there is a possibility to have more power. my two cents

Aviator 902S 07-01-03 07:06 PM

V8 = Good
Rx7 = Good
V8 in an Rx7--- Bad. Absolute blasphemy.
Have you considered dropping it into something a little less sacred? Like a Supra perhaps...
On the other hand, go ahead and install it in the 7. Because the more people who do this, the more my rotary-powered 7 goes up in value.

oh god, not another one of THESE threads..

Christ..

Here we go again.

I simply just HATE it when people put American engines in foreign cars... it's just stupid!! I mean it's just the same as putting a v8 in a civic-- if I heard the deep rumble like a Z06 coming out of a Civic I would laugh my ass off.

J-Rat 07-01-03 08:47 PM

never mind...

1987RX7guy 07-01-03 09:04 PM

The next "V8 V. Rotary" Dog fight.

Santiago

PS I don't like anything about V8's

Icemark 07-01-03 09:05 PM

off to other engines

Black13B 07-01-03 09:05 PM

my picture pretty much sums up any argument i would ever make, so that would be my only contribution.. lol.. :)

r3mix 07-01-03 09:30 PM

If your building a drag car then go for it. With drag cars you want a light ass car with a big ass engine.

I think domestic v8s in small imports is a great idea for drag.

But yeah, Would only be fun in a straight line.

cdk 4219 07-01-03 10:02 PM

Not so with the weight factor, as the new gen small block weighs in at about 525lbs with accessories and trans(t56). the TII weighs in about 500Lbs with accessories.. Do the swap you wont be dissapointed.

My88Se 07-01-03 10:04 PM

Yea and I'm real sure you would continue to laugh your ass off as he flew by you...

Audiofight 07-02-03 02:46 PM

Yes. A V-8 powered RX-7 does take away all the fun of having a rare engine in a one of a kind car.

I still have a 13B in mine, but only as long as the engine holds together. Maybe next time (if there is one) my engine will give me a little more warning, like overheating or poor running for a bit.

She ran great until that very day. I changed the tranny oil over from generic stuff that was in it to Royal Purple (which made my shifting alot easier) and was test driving it for 1.5 miles before returning home. Nice and easy, no more than 2000 rpm before shifting. Pop went the Apex.

It is your car. If you want some American muscle to push it, then just build the engine right. Make sure it can turn 8-9k rpm safely with a good crank and proper heads/pistons. That way you don't have a tach going to waste inside the car.

Don't listen to what these guys say. It is all up to you and your wallet to discuss.

joep 07-02-03 09:08 PM

I totally agree with everyone. Trust me I put some serious thought. I also am a fan of the rotary. I was fustrated by my experience with it not being reliable. Here is a list of my parts. Atleast i did it right.

350 4 bolt main
eagle forged 4340 crank and h-beam connecting rods
wisco pro-tru forged pistons
Lunati roller cam with roller rockers
487 head with 2.02/1.6 valves, 3 angle valve job
edlebrock rpm performer intake
Holly 750 4 barrell carb
Borg warner t-56 tranny (corvette 6 speed)
I also with with a gear driven timing set

Future:
Brodix 200cc heads
Fuel injection system
Vortec supercharger

It may be comforting to let you know that i have purcashed a second rx-7. This one i will keep rotary.

Audiofight 07-03-03 05:36 PM

I have already forgiven you and will be looking you up if I ever pass through Iowa.

I will want to take a ride in this thing. It will be nuts!

kyle@insight 07-04-03 11:50 PM

I like the v8 swaps into FCs. I personally don't like the styling of american cars but I do like the power delivery and the v8-7s are a blast to drive. I wouldn't auto-x one, but as far as tooling around and just having fun with the car, lotsa fun. I plan to build one eventually and put it into the 10 second 1/4 range, all while maintaining daily drivable reliability too :D

Rx-7Blazin 07-05-03 07:45 PM

v-8's are awsome, in an american muscle car not a forgine sports car expecialy and rx-7 what does rc-7 stand for? rotary experement # 7. personaly i would rather own a Trans Am WS6. but dont have the money.

Most RXs particularly the 1st and 2nd gen cars can be had motorless in a junkyard for $200. We're not talking about a rare Ferrari from the 1950s or a split window vette. We're talking about a low end commonly produced little jap sports car that was mass produced in huge numbers...

They were produced in large numbers, yes. But pristine examples are few and far between due to rust. I've owned 4 1st gens but only three rotaries between them--- the engines out-lasted the cars.
As for the ones in less-than-ideal shape, who cares what's under the hood? But if enough people keep putting v8's in the nicer 7's, there will be fewer and fewer mint originals---- which suits me just fine because it certainly can't hurt the value of mine.
These cars can be had in showroom condition for well under $5000 right now, but give it another ten or 15 years. By then they'll be worth much more even after you factor in the decreasing value of the dollar due to taxes and inflation--- as long as they haven't been modified in any way including v8 conversions.
Personally, I'd like to get my hands on a '67 Mustang and put a 20B in it, but that would decrease the value. That same engine in a 1970 (prior to emissions devices) Datsun 510 would be a different story.

TOUGHGUY 07-19-03 09:28 PM

And you would put a 20B in it because??????? It's a lighter motor? Umm No. It makes more HP? Umm No. It's relatively inexpensive and easy to come by? Umm No. A 20B making let's say 500hp (surely ported and/or boosted) will outlast a small-block Ford making the same power NORMALY ASPIRATED? Umm No.

I believe the rotary to be a good ICE design but it still needs alot of R&D to catch up to the reciprocating ICE. Its characteristics are just not that good for land vehicle application. No lower RPM torque whatsoever and they just were not built with enough displacement to compete with big american engines. The reason they never made big displacement rotaries is because they would weigh a ton and be inefficient.

So what is a person to do if they have a sweet RX7 with a dead motor (all too common I might add) and want performance that can equal a Corvette or Viper without breaking the bank? Hot Rodding at its best!

You know, little motors are fun. Hell I own an Integra! It's mostly stock and I can smoke most Civics etc... but I don't go looking for Mustangs and GM F-bodies! Eventually, some of us grow up and get bigger motors!

Driving a rotary is like riding a moped or fucking a fat chick. It's all fun until your friends find out!

Toughguy :)

(Big fu%&king shit-eatin' grin) Again, go ahead and install a v8 in your rex. That way us rotary drivers become more and more exclusive.
And I respect your right to your opinions.
If I were to ever put a 20B in a classic American muscle car it wouldn't be because I think it would cost less than a v8 or leave it standing still in a drag because it would do neither. It would only be to piss off the v8 purists and give them a taste of their own medicine. I just prefer the technology of the rotary to that of a piston engine.
Personally, I wouldn't drive an F-body or a new Mustang--- they're fun, but only until my friends find out and suspect me of being a sheep-shaggin' redneck...

Big motor = small penis.
