V-8 Swap, questions....Newbie

I have built plenty of cars (like a 4G63 Turbo Mitubishi Mirage, 1st Gen Eclipse 500whp, Fiat X 1/9, etc..etc..) Anyway, I am planning on doing an RX-7 conversion, and I wanted some advice and some suggestions on what to use. Here is my plan:

1. Buy a new motor from ProFormance Unlimited (link below) 350 Chevy/420HP.
http://www.proformanceunlimited.com/...0_420drop.html

Will I have to worry about wheel spin/Hop or just use slicks? Also, What is a good estimation of 1/4 mile times?

2. Buy a new T350 Trans from Monster Transmission (link below).
http://racetransmissions.com/store/p...roducts_id/201

Is this the right trans to use? Is there one that is better for this application?

3. Of course buy the conversion kit from Granny.

4. Don't laugh......Buy the RX-7 to put it in!

So there it is....My questions are many but here are some:

What rearend to use? Will the stock one work? What is involved in converting a manual RX-7 to automatic American?

Thanks a ton!!

Dave

There are a lot of variables that you havn't specified: Which generation of Rx7 is one of the most important one.

Are you going stricktly for drag car, will it also be a street car, will it be a road course car?

There is a ton of info here on suspension setups for each specific generation. There is alot of swap info here in this section and even more over at Torquecentral.com .

Couple of quick answers that I know about: Almost all Rx7's came factory with either 3.90 or 4.10 rear end gears. 1st gen stock rears can withstand about 400hp. There are 8.8 Ford rearends available to bolt in or you can swap do the work your self and instal the rear end of your choice.

1st gens had solid axles, while 2nd and 3rd gen had IRS. The T2 rear end for 2nd gens is supposed to handle almost anything you could throw at it (within reason- I'm not talking Pro-stock here). It has the larger ring gear than the NA powered cars. Don't know much about 3rd gens, Although I believe their rear ends are quite strong. Going up in power, I have heard about people swapping Mustang Cobra IRS in to their cars.

Wheel hop and IRS are not a good combo. Their have been alot of instances of half shafts breaking.

Most 1st gen owners go with either small block chevy's or Fords, while most 2nd and 3rd gen owners go with LSx motors with 6 spds. There is one guy who has put an LS1 into a 1st gen, but it was alot of work from what I understand.

Granny's has the 1st gen kits down to a science. If you are going 2nd or 3rd gen LSx motor, I would suggest Hinson's.

Easiest way to get answers is hit the search feature and get your favorite comfortable computer chair and start reading. The volume of info is overwhelming.

later,
Bill
