the v8 part of my intro wasnt the whole point of my intro. it was to introduce my self and my newly acquired car i want to do a 5 lug swap but i dont know where to start, i dont know any of the flaws that the car may have that i need to look for, and i want to upgrade other things on the car other than the engine so i wanted this thread to stay in the 1st gen section where more people will look at it. one idiot saw v8 and started asking me questions about why i want to do that, dont you think you should have warned him for starting a back and forth conversation about rotaries vs. v8's. who cares? i like rotaries and i like v8's. i guess i will repost my intro but say its getting an internal combustion engine of some sort.

I have received criticism on this forum and other places for my V8 RX7 conversion, and I always give them the same challenge: Post some photos of ANYTHING you have ever built with your own two hands. I have never had a response.

I have had never any criticism from anyone who has seen my car and who has any fabrication skills or experience. As I have often said, the people criticizing you probably don't even know how to change their own spark plugs.

Interestingly, I built a Mazda GLC with a 13b rotary, RX7 struts and brakes, custom built rear axle with RX7 limited slip, etc, and no one has ever criticized me for that.

I strongly recommend you consider a 302/5.0 rather than a 351, partly because of the weight but mostly because of the width. You will have plenty of room on the right side, but the head and valve cover will get very tight on the brake booster and master cylinder and your header will be crowding the steering. If you have power steering, it could be a serious problem, though I am not certain.

I started with a pretty nasty, mean sounding cam, but after 4 years of setting off car alarms in every parking lot, I recently changed to a stock Mustang GT (HO) cam, which has a nice smooth idle, is much nicer to drive, and if it is any slower, I can't notice the difference. I am now getting better gas mileage than the stock rotary.

And don't let people tell you to jam the engine back against the firewall. The effect on handling is just not significant, better to design for easy access as I did. Just about every nut and bolt is readily accessible on mine. The short water pump is made by Ford Motorsports, just for folks like us. I built everything myself, and then six months later Grannys started selling Ford kits! You can save a lot of trouble by using their kit. When I redid the cam I installed one of the Ron Davis radiators that Grannys provides, and it is really a top quality item.

So far as I could determine at the time, I was the first to install the 5 bolt second gen RX7 brakes on a 1st gen RX7, certainly the first to do both front and rear. They really make a huge difference in stopping power. I described in detail and with photos on this forum and on Cardomain how I did it, and a year later kits were being offered. This may or may not be coincidental, but I am happy. My machinist says he would not make the parts for twice what these guys are charging.

More details on mine are at:

i planned on using the granny's kit for the 351. i just want a little more oomph and room to grow my horsepower from the start. the 351 is more stout of a block and i plan on going big with the power later on. we'll see what happens. i have to talk to someone at granny's to see if they have done the 351 yet with power steering. if so its 351 then since this will be a part time weekend car for mostly straight line runs. oh yeah, thanks for all the info stilleto, i just picked up a set of hubs and knuckles from a 5 lug fc for 50 bucks. heck yea.

all this talk about throw off balance if you do a v8 swap...blah blah blah....how many of you ACTUALLY compete in events where that really matters????? from what the guys over at v8rx-7 are saying, the v8 rx-7's are out performing even the boosted and 3 rotor rotary rx7's in almost every way. most of the drift rx-7's are going to pushrod v-8's

im doing a v8 swap, well...becuase the 12a is BORING...no offense.after me owning 2 10 second v8 cars the 12a isnt excited at all. my wifes mini cooper RAPES my 12a bad..and my FB had just about every bolt on made for a stock port.

money per HP points in the V8 swap direction..you cant argue with that

i love my FB, i really do..but it really needs more HP and the way to do that is a v8...for roughly $4,000 i can have 300 plus hp and 300plus tq on a fresh rebuilt naturally aspirated small block and get 25mpg...or i can take a shot in the dark, spend 2500 on a t2 swap, and another 2500 for misc parts and a rebuild and get horrible gas mileage, no torque and less reliability when you really push the motor.

and lets not even talk about the price of a 300hp NA 12a......lol

the kit to drop a small block ford into an FB is $380 that includes the bolt in motor mounts, bolt in tranny crossmember and the modified drive shaft. i build my own for smallblocks so i have a 1970 hi-comp 302 that i am rebuilding shooting for 300whp and a buddy of mine is building my c4 tranny for me....now im looking at about $2500 for the ENTIRE swap.

end rant

my friend caleb from fastlane motorsports in benson NC makes 1500hp in his stroked/turbo dart block 302.....seen MANY 302 based motors make well over 600, seen stock bottom end 302's make 450-500 0n a good tune....my 10.8:1 compression 306 made 403hp/397tq all motor and it was streetable..a buddy of mine had mildly built 306 with an s-trim on 12 psi and ran 10.30 @ 134mph through an AOD in a 3200lb foxbody coupe (497hp/470tq)

gotta have a 351......come on now

go with a 302..
