LT1 starter motor stuck engaged?

so i started my LT1-7 today and it sounded like the starter motor stayed engaged... is this possible? what happened was when i started it instead of jumping up to about 1500 like it always does it only revved to about 600 rpms. i shut it down real quick but there was a nice puff of smoke that came out of the engine bay... only lasted for a second... so did i fry my starter?

Easiest thing is to remove the starter and engage it outside the car using jumper cables. See it if hangs up or works properly. The LT-1 starters are rebuildable. I completely rebuilt mine new brushes, turned the commutator and replaced the solonoid. Ive seen corrosion form inside the solonoid causing your problem. Best bet is to remove it to look more closely. Its worth a shot as these starters are not cheap.

It sounds like you need to shim the starter out just a bit.
