LS1 v8 FD/FC headers.. Found a useful source maybe..

Just thought I'd throw this up as I was looking for something unrelated and found it. A little cheaper than Hinsons, although no pictures, forgive me if it's been posted already....

You mean these?

Yeah, they've been out for awhile. If you don't frequent torquecentral they might be under your radar.

They are better than Hinsons because the headers are actually in stock. There are people waiting 6-12months on the Hinson headers and never get any and still plan on waiting indefinately. The Hinson headers he made initially were a mid length and not long tube anyway.

These headers picked up 15rwhp+ over MAC midlength headers on a '99 LS1 with ported 5.3 heads and 225/225 112LSA cam, LS6 intake/ported TB. 428rwhp on 91 octane.

I have a set on my LS1/FD and the fit is near perfect. 10 minute install with simply jacking the car off the ground and putting it on jackstands.

Mark,

Did yours go in front the top or the bottom?

I have my exhaust off and am just finishing unbolting the trans itself to do some slave cylinder work.

Passenger side looks like a breeze, but drivers side looks easier from the top, however I have 98 valve covers and the perimeter bolts are causing me some trouble.

They both go in from the bottom. Just for ***** and giggles I tried it from the top on both sides, and I couldn't find an angle that would work.

Installation from the bottom couldn't be easier though. If you can get your car a good 18"-20" off the ground it won't be an issue at all.

It would help to have an extra set of hands to hold the header in place while you crawl out from under the car, but it's not a necessity.

with this conversion/and headers is it possible to keep the stock location of the cat ( i have a resonated midpipe and i would like to keep it, is it possible)? or because of the tranny it will not fit?

Anything's possible since the exhaust needs to be custom. My original setup kept my catback intact.

I'd guess that you'll likely ditch the midpipe though, as it's more trouble to try to keep it than it's worth. The midpipe simply extends too far forward compared to how the exhaust needs to be routed. Most people will Y or X the pipes off the headers just behind the transmission brace.

If you want a good idea of how the exhaust routes with the headers installed, I have some pictures posted in a thread I started updating the progress on my winter project.

The pictures in post #6 will give you the best idea of why the midpipe won't work.

P is raw, SEC is a ceramic coating (like Jethot)

Wingsfan, can I get a ride in your car sometime? I've really been considering the swap, but need that extra little push. We have our TexasRX's meet tonight at Rudys on 183 at 7:30pm. You might have some problems with the diehards that show up, but there are a few of us looking at other options. Being a car club though you shouldn't have any big problems, just some **** talkers that don't like to read the wieght scale printouts.

Absolutely. I'm hoping to have it finished sometime this summer. I just have some small little details (like an exhaust, driveshaft, wiring, and fuel computer ) and some trouble shooting to get on the road again.

Running problem free for a year just wasn't good enough, so I had to add a few features.

Unfortunately my car's in a million pieces, and I have a meeting this evening that will prevent me from heading out to Rudys in the STi. Maybe I'll make it out to the next one and just hang out/meet and greet. I like shooting the breeze with car guys, even if they're serious rotorheads.

Almost everyone I've met in person has been super cool about it, even some of the diehards. I've had exactly one person tell me off in person, and he changed his tune after giving him a ride. There's still no way he'd have done it to his own car, but he was far less critical.

Will the stock rear end hold up as long as I get rid of the torsen? Its hard to get your hands on the cobra cradle setup.

Yeah, the stock rear end will do just fine. Hinson got down to around 10 flat with the Kaaz and 300M axles. As long as you're not doing clutch dumps on sticky tires, even the stock rear end will hold up OK (mine did anyways).

The benefit of the Cobra IRS isn't the strength, that's just a bonus. It's the available gear selection (anything from ~2.7s to ~6.3s).

If you just want to replace the guts of your existing pumpkin, the 3.90 auto gears are more desireable than the 4.10s (if you drag race). I was still getting 30+ MPG on the highway with 4.10s, and they're more desireable if you autocross.

Cool. I do want better mpg, since thats one point of doing the entire swap. I don't really drag race, but I do enjoy the good romp from time to time. I'll stick with the stock rear end until I blow it apart then...
