LS1 swap info

When you guys swap a chevy motor into the 2nd gen, do you have to remove the subframe or does the small block bolt to it? I am in the process of installing a 1.9 liter turbo diesel VW motor into my convertible. I've hit a snag with the cross member. I may have to remove it and build a new one because the p/s pump will not clear it.

thanks

Can you live without powersteering? I drive a S4 (with highest ration rack, 16:1 or something close) and it is fine to daily drive. It can be a chore to parallel park if you're a smaller person, but it has a much better feel at speed than the power setup. I dont know if deleting the pump would mess with your belt routing and tentioning though.
