LS1 high mileage or low mileage?

I've been calling around and checking for LSX engines and it seems that I don't think it would be cost effective to buy a LS2 for 7500.

The people I have been talking to priced me a 02 LS1/T56 and (everything I would need) with under 20k miles for $5,000. The same place said that anything over 50k miles had a drastic and signifigant price drop. They priced a LS1/T56 with 79k miles for $3,100.

My question is: Is a $1,900 price difference worth the extra increase in mileage? Will I be running into alot of trouble with a 79k mile engine? Would I need to rebuild a 79k mile engine?

The compression on the 79k mile engine was 185 over 175. I have seen 205/210 comp motors with under 20k miles for $4,500. The higher compression would be a higher efficiency and higher power output, but how much?

Does anyone have a dyno chart from a stock motor in the 185/175 comp ranged as compared to one in the 205/210 range?

I have a budget of near $10,500 (+ w/e I get for the rotor drivetrain) so if I can save money on the engine I would like to use it on: wheels/tires + suspension + burnoutkit + minor engine upgrades.

I am looking at $6,350 for a high mileage swap vs. $8,250 for a low mileage swap.

When I look at having $4,150 left over for wheel tire suspension engine upgrades it looks alot better than having $2250 left over.

Hinson Kit --- $1565 shipped
Engine/Tranny LS1/T56 --- $3,100-5,000 (picked up high miles - low miles)
LS2/T56Bearing --- $125
PCM (Vats removal) --- $80
Harness Mod --- $0 - 150 (I might just do this myself)
JTR Radiator --- $130 shipped
JTR Headers --- $675 1 7/8 bare (high temp exh wrap until I can get them coated)

If you have anything to add that I would need on this conversion that I did not list please post it. Since I haven't done this conversion before I am just gathering information and trying to plan it all out before I start writing checks.

(I left out fuel pump because I am currently unsure of which one to go with)
(Also this is going in a 1993 FD with an AUTOMATIC)

doing auto - manual swap...need all the clutch stuff...master cylinder, lines...not to mention the pedals...

as for the LS1 vs LS2...I would look into how much it would take to rebuild the LS1 and possibly mod it...can u match the performance of the LS2 with less money in the rebuilt LS1? of course, what are the plan for the car? just drive? or put more power down with time?

oh and i would love to come help some weekends...

My target is to have a 400whp 400tqw and be reliable for a daily driver. That's to start out with. I would like cut it out for 11" wide all around.

Daily driver/Track Car. Not really so much of drag racing, I would like to have some SCCA and just track driving fun with it. A bullet proof daily driver/track car.

Any help would be awesome, I have some local guys that might do the same thing as I am doing if mine works out so all the better. I spent all Thanksgiving weekend cleaning out my garage and organizing my tools so I can really get down on this car. I am hoping that I will have enough $$ to maybe skip the suspension for a month or two and just go ahead and buy a lift. That pending on weather I go with a higher mileage engine or not though.

So... this thread brings up an interesting point. Are there some specific reasons why the value drops so much after 50k miles?

I honestly don't know a whole lot about the LS series engines but I've never really heard of any reliability issues. Makes me wonder whether it's just the stigma of "high mileage" (not an issue for me) or something worth worrying about.

I bought low milage because I felt there was less time for someone to forget to change the oil / poor maintenance.... but that's my paranoia... on the flip side I bought a motor from a car that had bearly been broken in 20K mi, and someone got rearended.... makes you wonder... since not all motors are from 65 Year old retirees who happen to get rearended at a red light by a civic and they junk the car...
