Legal Conversion?

I need help. I am a newb to this forum and I jsut got a 94 FD. I love the hell out of it, well LOVED it till it died. Yeah supposedly I need a new engine but anyways I was quoted at like 3k. I want to just get it over and done with the problems so I was thinking about an engine conversion. Are there any that would pass smog here in California? And if there is could you please recommend me what engine. I am familiar with the SR20 engines and LS1's if that helps any bit. Thankyou for you time and kind consideration.

A Fellow FD man in Need of Help....

You should probably do some research and ask questions over there. It's where most of us who've done/are doing the swaps hang out. you're less likely to get flamed too.

Thanks man, but have you heard of anyone putting in an SR20, I know they are only puny 4 bangers but still it might be cheaper

The SR is no wimpy 4 banger, it's a pretty decent 4 banger with potential

Search this forum for the guy that has done it and as far as I know there is only 1 SR FD. A LS1 swap with cost you about 3 times the amount to rebuild a rotary.

sorry I didn't mean to rag on it.

Anyways do you know what woud be cheaper and more realiable in the long run, either converting to a piston engine, or making a bullet proof rotary engine...if that is even possible.

I know these cars aren't know for their reliability, and I stumbled onto mine by chance. I got it for cheap and I am willing to spend about 5k to make it bullet proof..if that is possible. I love the engine in it now and it's power and balance, I just wished it didn't have as many problems. By the way, I just got the car so any bad matinence isn't my fault.

Oops, I forgot to put a smilie at the end of that sentence. I wasn't upset at all so no appology needed

You can barely get a LS1 pullout for $5k, most LS1 swaps end up running $9-10k. Some even go over $20k!

It's mainly about how much power you want to make as far as how reliable it will be and which steps to take.

This car is not for you. You bought a cheap example and you get what you pay for. I suggest cutting losses now and selling it and moving on to something else.

For only $5k, you can do a basic rebuild rotary engine. It won't be "bulletproof", but should last at least 80k miles, unless you mod it stupidly or cheaply or get unlucky.

You cannot do an engine swap even half-way correctly for $5k. Unless you have fabrication skills or have friends who do, you're going to be spending several thousands in labor and parts, let alone the cost of the donor engine/tranny.

Agreed. There's just no way to do this swap 'cheaply'. You start cutting corners in ANY swap, and you're bound to have problems.

Yeah I got a lemon I guess but I never regret getting the car. My dad's firned was parting out with it because he was moving and I got it for 8k with 102k on it so I'n not really mad cause I heard they normally run for 12 or something. So how much do you suggest a good engine rebuild should cost?
