Just the engine

Im just causually looking over the idea of converting. There seems to be alot involved. What I was wondering, is if there is an engine that you can just drop in, that will work with the stock tranny\cooling system?

Well, there is the possibility that my rotary is going to need a rebuild. (1) Honestly, not to sound cheap, but this is just my big toy car. Id rather not dump two grand into the engine right now. (2) Ive owned three rotarys, theyre wonderful machines...but they can be quirky as all hell. If it has to have a new engine, Id rather it be a simple mid sized v6 that I could modify to a decent 250-300hp. Im not a racer, or a drifter, I just enjoy the body style of my 2nd gen, and would like to keep it around and servicable.

Youd need an engine plate to bolt up to the tranny made, and Im not sure how youd do the flywheel/clutch/pilot bushing stuff.

FWIW T5s into FCs are cheap, simple, and easy. Crossmembers to bolt it in are readily available!

If you want a cheap 250-300 hp, you cant go wrong with any of the v8s, and the 2.3 turbo ford is the best bang/buck motor I know of up to 400 whp.

BTW, do you want 250 bhp or 250 whp?

It would be nice to have 250 at the wheels, but hey, even if I could just make a small gain of 175-200 at the wheels I'd be satisfied. My stock '86 n\a makes about 145 if I remember correctly, so as long as I match and\or beat that, I'm in good shape. In reading through this forum, I will deffinately be considering the ford 2.3 turbo, if a rebuild is inevitable.

2.3 T makes 175 whp bone stock. 200 with just maxing the boost on the tiny *** IHI (that is basically maxed out there), the 60 trim T3 that was the other turbo available on it peaks at about 300 whp with a proper tune, sufficient headflow/cam, uh.... a good IC and enough fuel to keep up with it. But thats literally the max you could expect to get out of that, youre way out of the efficiency range by then.

As far as down the line, well, 400 whp isnt a big deal with a big enough turbo (get a HX35 so you get some fast spool too), fuel, tune, and a ported or esslinger aftermarket head w/ a cam. You can totally cheap out with it, too... tis why Im doing a 2.3.

Your cars a coupe, right? Jess is having issues w/ the vert x-member we didnt foresee... and you should prolly do the alt relocation and custom intake to clear the hood. Apparnently the pully should clear the hood with a little notching of the supports, but the alterantor in the high stock location would interfere.

There is no engine that will bolt up in place of the stock rotary, except for another rotary of similar year.

Unless you do a lot of work, you're stuck with the rotary. It's the sad truth.

In looking at engine and transmissions, Im finding that getting both is gonna run between 500 and 700 dollars, depending on what I get. (for a 350 chevy v8) Or between 300 and 500 for the ford 2.3. Thats not really bad prices for parts, but let me ask this while were on the subject. Most of you guys sound like youve done the work yourself. Im sorry, but Im not that skilled lol. Anyone here have any idea how much it would be in labor if a shop tried to pull off a conversion like either of those?

If you are not very skilled, you will dump way too much money into the project if you pay a custom shop to do the work. You would be much better off buying a finished V8 FC or FB on ebay or from a classified ad here on this forum. $5k or less buys you a car equivalent to a TII with lot$ of mods.
