He can believe in sticking with the rotary all he wants, but the way he came across was all emotional and defensive about it. Its a ENGINE, not his RELIGION! Im taking issue with him saying its BS and crap.
The TRUTH about how it is, the FACTS About its efficiency (or lack thereof) thermodynamically because of the geometry of it, the shape of the combustion chamber, and the fact that it doesnt very well ignite all of the fuel/air charge is not "anti rotary comments" its the TRUTH! We have REASONS we picked a different engine. Bang for buck (and those reasons have a lot to do with why that is so), torque, reliability, fuel efficiency, those are all FACTS. Something we 'believe' (like say we just prefer a v8) would be nothing but opinion vs opinion. But, in this case, its his opinion vs a reason of ours.
If he is an enthusiast and wants to use it, fine! I dont care! I just dont want him calling this "crap" and "BS" when we have concrete REASONS. However, to be fair I am a little ticked at one particular rotary fan who got violently angry at me when he found out I was going to swap out the car if I bought his, so Im probably defensive and hypersensitive myself now.
I dont despise rotaries or people who use them, but the reality of what they are and what they do is something thats factual and can be PROVEN empirically. In light of that when someone gets on my *** or I see him get on other peoples asses for putting in what is by all means a superior engine except that it physically takes up more space (but not that much, and its proven to not be a factor in RX-7s) it tends to tick me off.
Its a case of you run into people who are so full of the marketing and the enthusiast belief in the rotaries superiority (sounds like the vtec boys, dunnit?) that when something alternative comes along that challenges their BELIEF - proveably or not, they get pissed off and threatened by that challenge to their 'belief' and they react like this, or like that ricer who about bit my head off over the car.
See where Im coming from? If hes an enthusiast, I got NO problem with that! I have a problem with people who "believe" in the superiority of some engine and their connection and preference for it and they get a giant case of cognitive dissonance when someone challenges that belief. Protecting peoples beliefs and tip-toeing around offending ANYONE is nonsense. Its not a case of a Christian vs a Muslim here, its a case of him not liking someone using a non rotary engine on purely emotional grounds, and bitching about it, and there being a logical reason behind why we do what we do.
"Belief" in liking it and being an enthusaist is great, but thats not so much as a belief as just a enthusiasm. Belief in its superiority and flipping out when its proveably not true is not the kind of belief anyone should be protecting, or going out of your way to cater to someones childish sensitivities. Belief in something like a religion and not attacking that is in no way linked to some belief in how good an engine is when its a very OBJECTIVE thing and hes the one spouting off and stirring it up.
Ill be fair, my comments about how a RX-7 would have been with a piston engine were probably just pouring salt on the wound and inflamatory. I shoudnt say things JUST to **** someone off... but I really do have a short fuse for reactionary BS just because someone doesnt want to be 'wrong' because they think their engine is hot **** or better than everything else.
That said, and because of that I should just bite my tongue when stuff like this comes up. I already have a fresh set of toothmarks from Jimlab... and if I could put up with him I could put up with ANYONE.
