How much could I complete a LS1 FD for?

To answer most of you that are going to say "use the search button," I have already used the search button and havent come up very educated. Yes I am a noob to FD's with Conversions, so please help me to your fullest.

I need to find a FD Shell with NO engine/transmission in fairly good shape. What kind of price do you think I could find one for? Ive seen one guy asking $7k and I think thats high for just a shell. PM me a link if there is a good one for sale that you know of.

As for the engine, I would like a good used LS1 with Transmission. Again, I havent found anything on LS1 with Tranny for sale. So I am looking for a reasonable price so I dont get screwed over.

So in general how much could I complete a LS1 FD for?

Thanks in advance, *puts flame suit on.*

Correct me if I am mistaken, but from what they say...

"Our base building cost is $8,656.72 plus the cost of the engine and transmission."

Meaning Engine & Tranny being built to their specifications and ready to be dropped in right?

Think they would find me a FD Shell and build it if I put a down payment + paperwork? Trying to make this as easy as possible.

Thanks for the help guys. I have emailed Hinson Supercars to see if they could track down a good FD and do the full conversion for me. So I am just waiting on a reply from them.

Any F-body LS1 and transmission is already an easy bolt-in. A lot of people swap the cam, add heads or something but the Hinson kit is based on a stock motor and no mods are going to change that. Torque Central has a large number of build-up threads explaining just about every detail you can think of, definitely check it out.

As for cost, it depends on how lucky you are at finding deals. My shell was only $3500 but it needed paint, a little bodywork and quite a few interior pieces. $7k is high but if it is in good shape and just missing the powertain it's not that bad. A couple guys have done a swap from a running rotary to the LS1 for very little or no cost by selling parts they didn't need anymore.

I'm into my whole car for about $25-26k right now, but that includes many items that aren't "required" like wheels, tires, headlight kit, nylon bushings, drag launch kit, tuning software, stuff like that. I also went with a new complete exhaust including headers, where using stock manifolds would have saved me about $1k. So it really depends on what you want the end result to be.

There are things that you can skimp on and there are things that need to be done right. Paying someone else to do the swap for you will have the biggest impact on the price.

~7k for a clean roller
~4.5k for engine & trans
~8.5k for Hinson to swap it

So thats about $20k, and probably doesn't include parts that you would want to upgrade, like long tube headers and an ECU flash to clear anti-theft, emmissions codes and skip shift, suspension bushings, etc. Remember that you are buying a car thats roughly 13 years old and there are a lot of parts that you will want to upgrade besides the motor.

i called hinson the other day. the kit with everything you could think of that they recommend is at 4,000. That will take care of radiator and i believe y pipe and headers. Along with the premiuim package. Plus then you can find a nice used ls1 with a 6 speed for anywhere around 3.500 to 4,500. just depends on where you look and how serious you are about it. Hinson is a good shop and if you want to pay them you wont be dissapointed. Just look really hard and you'll find something.

I think 20 to 25k is reasonable,if you think about it no other car anywhere near that price is faster or looks better, handles better etc etc. Theres just nothing out there with this kind of power to weight ratio unless you get into exotics costing much more $.

you could build one for under 10 grand including the FD but if you want a nice pristine FD with a fresh LS1 in there, youre looking at a 15k-20k project.

I wouldn't sell mine for less then $35K...... only if you convinced me, best daily/track car I've owned. The only time you get an FD cheap, is High mileage and missing parts, and we all know to get it back into what I think is mint condition it cost LOTS$$$$$$$$$$$.

im glad i don't have to worry about the shell. Nice little unfortunete circumstances as far as my bro goes. But everything you need can be had for 4000 or so. The engine and tranny are a large expense, but if you look around a lot you can find some really good deals. My build up will be starting sometime around late september mid october

I'm confused by this.

Are you referring to just the swap components from Hinson or Granny's? Because there isn't a single person that's completed a swap for that amount. You'd have to steal the majority of the parts. The original poster doesn't already have a car, motor and transmission sitting around.

Hmm.. I've got $1500 in mounting equipment, $500 in cooling, $350 in a fuel system, $4700 in engine/trans, $550 in tuning software, $150 in driveshaft modification, $1500 in exhaust.... the list goes on. All I can say is good luck.
