fuel pressure issue

has anyone else ever ran into a fuel pressure problem running a carb'd small block? im using the stock fuel pump with custom fuel routing lines and a holley regulator. now i realize that there is a tremendous amount of pressure that needs to be regualted down (like 35-40psi ish? considering a carbd 350 only needs what 5+psi?) but ive never heard of anyone changing out the fuel pump.

the problem im running into is under heavy loads, my fuel pressure drops to 0. now what im thinking is that the pump is overloading the regulator(floating the spring and diaphram) which in turn shuts the pump off causing vapor lock.

im thinking of adding another regulator.

any opinions/ideas?

On my first conversion I did away with the stock fuel pump and ran a Holley red pump mounted under the car. I had no issues what so ever.

did you just mount it into your existing lines? what about pick ups, filters, sumps...all the other components?

I used the stock filter or you could get one of those plasic inline ones. When I removed the stock fuel pump I put in a piece of rubber hose so it would still pick up from near the bottom. You have a rubber line that comes out off the top of the tank and all I did was remove it and added lines to go from the tank to the fuel pump and the fuel pump back to the stock line up to the front of the car. I used the stock wires and cut the wire for the stock pump and ran it to the holley red pump and put in a larger fuse.

Good luck.
