Smile FB LS Swap

Hey there. I'm Planning on dropping and LS into my 83 FB. I wish I could keep the rotary but I just don't have the cash for one. I'm going to be getting my hands on a junkyard LS (Already have my eyes on one) and am wondering what manual trans will bolt onto the 5.3 I'm looking at. Also if anyone can give me some advice on what I should do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

V8 swap/ local FB parts

Hi, I see you are local and wanted to let you know I bought a successful Mustang 302 powered FB road race car that came with a spare FB chassis and a lot of spare body parts, interior parts that is more than I need for race spares and are taking up too much space. So if there is currently any RX7 parts u need, just ask as it would be easier and cheaper than shipping them. Also, I am selling the spare car’s GSL-SE 5 speed complete (ad in First Gen forum) , Racing Beat complete exhaust in excellent shape (used) with photos and ad coming to the Club soon, and the gas tank, radiator, larger style oil cooler, etc. for anyone that you know is looking for these FB parts. Pleased to hear you are keeping it original, was my plan originally but getting spare SBF much easier for racing than rotary engines!

I have a 5.0 short block sitting on a crate that I picked up from someone with an aborted V8 conversion. I once had thought I would put it in a caged first gen but ended building it to EP spec’s. Don’t need it and would like to get rid of it. If either of you are interested LMK. I’m in Mountain View but get up to the Nortbay for work every few weeks. Would be interested in trade for parts.

Short block 5.0

Hi Kurtf, Thanks for the offer ! I have a full spare engine on my engine stand now minus the oil pan stiffener and still need the complete bolt set, so I don’t have a need but will ask around locally if anyone does. I would also list in Stangnet on line Mustang club forum.

I stated my race shop in Redwood City, “Competition Service & Engineering “ in 1985 while living in the Peninsula so know your area well. My friend owns Modena Motors (Ferrari and Lamborghini service) in Redwood City, there are lots of cool shops down your way and in San Carlos industrial area. It’s a automotive cornucopia where you are compared to Napa Valley! If you have the OEM oil pan stiffeners (plates) and bolt kit let me know, if you want to sell them separately.
Good luck.

Update: Sold FB gas tank & RB racing exhaust complete

Just wanted to put it out there that the stock GSL-SE gas tank is sold with all associated parts and hardware to include the fuel filler neck, sending unit, in tank pick up/float and complete Racing Beat exhaust, before I got a chance to post it here but went to local enthusiast total restoration of 1982 FB!

Oil cooler and other parts to be listed soon!

LS swap into FB

NapaRX7, There is a full build thread on a LS swap as a “stickie” at the front of this section that has a lot of lessons learned and details on what is needed. In my experience the RX7 stock differential will not stand up to the torque of an LS> especially the truck engine formats and you will see rear end wear and tear if you drive hard, so a lot of guys put in a 8.8 Ford rear end and swap brakes onto the fire axles which will make your wheels stick out more but can be corrected by wheel offset to some degree depending on how wide and large your rims are (mine are 15”) to prevent tire rubbing and other issues. We run a pump
ans diff cooler on our Ford 8.8 rear end to keep diff temps below 280 F during 8-24 hr endurance races as it will heat your seals up enough to make them leak as well as increase gear teeth wear and backlash increase.
With all swaps make sure you get all the wiring harness, sensors and original ECU, it is a lot of trouble to reverse engineer wiring, make sure to get the LS fuel pump and return lines, as a starting point and will enable any diagnostic testing that is needed that often occurs with junk yard motors.

Look for vendors on RX7 Club and No Rotors . Com that specialize in performance mods and also carry LS swap parts.

Best of luck!

A t56 from a 4th F body fits perfectly mine comes out in the stock spot, all you have to do is cut the factory mounts off then build a bracket for it
