BlinD's 93 R1 Build
Figured it was time to post a build thread, so here we go...
Picked up the car a few months ago and since then have started to fix up stuff back to OE condition and mod as I go. Mods when I took delivery of the car: - Apexi Power FC w/ Commander - Pinned non-sequential - Supra Fuel Pump - GReddy Profec B 'tuned' to ~15psi (stock SMIC) :icon_tdow - GReddy Turbo Timer - GReddy downpipe with custom catless midpipe - Unknown short shifter - RacingBeat front swaybar connector - Tokico 5 way adjustable shocks w/ the R1 springs Mods I've done so far: - Interior cleanup (plastidip spray to give '94+' look) - Pettit steering wheel gauge shroud w/ Boost Gauge - Custom engine torque damper Click here for my how-to thread - 99' spec tails - Misc interior/exterior parts replacement back to OE Pics of the car when I first got it: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0265.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0378.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0275.jpg Some interior shots when I was working on it (will get finished pics up soon): http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0266.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0269.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0268.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0272.jpg Not two weeks later I took the car out to a meet and had a racoon dive bomb into the car: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...7/IMG_0286.jpg Most of the damage was superficial and just hurt my wallet in replacement parts All fixed up and out for a little shoot (more pics in the 'Post your FD thread') : http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...9/IMG_3716.jpg After doing some research I decided what direction to go with an intercooler since I wasn't fond of the idea of running that ammount of boost through the stocker. I decided on the GReddy SMIC w/ hardpipe kit. After tearing into the car to do the install I found alot of 'shortcuts' in the non-sequential conversion and decided to clean that up and do some other mods at the same time. Mods on the agenda: - Banzai Racing 9 piece Block-Off plates (Remove the studs by double-nutting them and replace with provided bolts w/ some locktite.) - Pineapple Racing Idler Pulley kit - Efini Y-pipe - GReddy SMIC w/ Hardpipes Teardown: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0415.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0416.jpg |
AWS and AWS tube Blocked off:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0448.jpg I also performed the coolant bypass while the UIM was off: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0456.jpg Also when the UIM was off I decided to keep it from heatsoaking: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0449.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0453.jpg Engine buttoned back up a bit, cleaned the UIM/TB as well from oxidation: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0455.jpg Efini Y-Pipe installed: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0460.jpg Engine coming along (plan is after the car is running and the SMIC is plummed to take it back down and powdercoat all the hardpipes and elbow silver like the Efini pipe): http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0458.jpg Good shot of the Pineapple Racing idler pulley (Sexy part that is rarely seen lol): http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0463.jpg I'll contine to keep this thread updated on the progress of the car. Let me know if you have any questions in regards to mods that have been done or going to be done. - Jon |
Damn sexy. Love Black on black R1. Love the plate too. Looks like she's on the right track to good care. Is that the idler pulley for more belt contact to the waterpump? G
|
Exactly. I've read too much negative things about deleting the airpump and soley relying on a larger diameter pulley w/ shorter belt.
Figured the cost wasn't that much more for the Pineapple Racing kit vs a GReddy pulley set or comperable. The good thing is later on I can go to the larger diameter waterpump pulley to aleviate cavitation and still have a 'stock' contact patch. |
Awesome work, do you have any shots of the interior all done and put back together? Want to see what the outcome looks like.
|
Great work, thanks for posting pics.
|
I will try to get some pics this weekend when the car is moving. It's almost impossible to get good interior shots in the garage due to lighting.
|
Looking good!
Was it a pain to remove that rear turbo pipe? |

Was it a pain to remove that rear turbo pipe? I haven't reinstalled the pipe yet, so might be interesting getting a torque wrentch up there  |
Yeah, I'm going to take mine off to have it ceramic coated. Luckily I do have a 3" aftermarket down pipe, so that's relieving.
Do you have to torque those turbo pipe bolts back to spec?? They seem kinda small to put too much force on... as if the bolts/nuts would break with too much pressure. ??? |
The y-pipe/charge pipe only get about ~96 inch lbs, which equates out to about 8 ft lbs.
Like you said, its not much, but anytime I'm dealing with gaskets I like to make sure its equal pressure around the surface. |

We usually stop at the publix on PGA and the turnpike before we go to the track. |
Cool thanks for the invite... My goal is to have the car up and running with the idle dialed back in by the weekend. If that goes as planned I may attend and might be able to convince my friend to come as well ;)

Gorgeous shot!
At first glance it looked like a CF hood, but after peeling my tiny Asian eyelids open I realized that it's just a shiny glare. |
Nope, you were right the first time.. I believe he has the CF Feed replica, not sure of the make though
|
It's defiantly a FEED hood.
|
Goddamn eyeballs, it is a FEED hood....

For the guys wondering how access is to the rear turbo inlet/charge pipe:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0464.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0466.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0467.jpg Now, onto the headache... When I was initially attempting to size/fit the GReddy SMIC I had some issues, but I wrote it off and decided to do all the other subsequent mods. When I attempted to revisit it tonight, this is what I was dealing with: Using the GReddy 'cover' to align the SMIC, seemed to be getting me more in the ballpark of alignment then having the stock ducting in the way: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0468.jpg Coolant hose bracket or no bracket, I couldn't get the SMIC bracket to line up: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0470.jpg You can see the dust on the pulley from where the SMIC was making contact before I used the cover to align it: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0472.jpg Now, onto the worst: Hard pipes: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0469.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0473.jpg How in the hell could this conceivably mount like this? Any engine movement at all would shred these pipes to pieces. Just the pipes touching when trying to size was making small aluminum shavings. Currently I'm at a loss for what to do next. Any protips on mounting the GReddy SMIC? |
wow... looks like this is coming along great! keep up the good work

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0449.jpg http://gallery.tfrascone.net/var/alb...6/DSC_8582.jpg haha looks good!!! the silver is more subtle. i'm sure they perform the same. too bad i ran out of the stuff so i didn't quite make it to the tb. |
Bling bling goooooold ;)
Anyone have thoughts on the hardpipes? I did some digging and found some mention that the GReddy 2 piece kit 'may not fit with the GReddy SMIC and may need to be trimmed'. Looks like I have about 1/2" on each end that could be cut off, but then I need to get a bead back on the pipe |
That sucks! I had to make some custome brackets for my FMIC to fit right, i haven't had anything go smothly on this car
If you are not using the ducting that came with the SMIC will it fit? |

If you are not using the ducting that came with the SMIC will it fit? Now that I have some sort of reference using their duct I guess I can build around it. Looks like my local welder has the ability to roll pipe beads so I may just chop a bit off each end of the longer pipe to give some room for flex. I'll keep you all posted. |
Cool project
I like the way simplified twin turbos look |
i like your project. great, thorough work.

^ I raise to large single turbo:lol:
Decent build thread. =Benjamin |
Thank you for the rear turbo pipe pictures!!!
Interesting about the coolant hose bracket. One would imagine Greddy would make a bracket to adapt to the stock engine bay parts. Personally, I think it's cool there is a bracket for the coolant hose. I guess you could drill a new hole? Looking good! |

Skip the Greddy duct, it's useless. I haven't had success using that for alignment either. I cut the stock duct down to the middle of the air inlet hole cutout (2+ inches), installed it back on the car & ensured that it aligned up with the a/c dryer, then bolted up the intercooler & did fabrication work around that. Remove the coolant hose bracket, bolt up the intercooler to the hole on the right.

haha yeah that's on my list for the next time i've got the turbos out...well, that or one of those turblown lim jackets... |
lol with all this heat wrapping going on, we need to get afgmoto in this thread with his almost entirely gold wrapped engine bay
|
Hey man, looks great. Never seen the silver/gold foil on the UIM, that's a great idea. One thing I noticed after looking at your pics: if you're nonsequential, you can remove the pressure chamber (the black box that sits right in front of the UIM, has two vacuum lines coming out on the driver's side), precontrol/wastegate control solenoids (mounted as a pair on the UIM), and the metal vac rack that goes down towards the turbos where the actuators are. You can probably put them up for sale and make some money back too :) Also, you don't need any of the solenoids on the rats nest (unless you want to keep your pressure regulator control, you eliminated your ACV so the relief and switching solenoids can get tossed, your EGR was eliminated too), you can take the whole thing out (the metal rack, solenoids, etc. just cap off any open nipples on the intake mani). You'll end up with a bunch of unconnected harness connectors... you may want to wrap those up with some heat resistant tape. The branch of the harness that has all of the rack solenoid clips, you can tuck that behind your fuel lines (sit it on top of the tranny) if you want to open up the space under the UIM a little more... you can also remove the charge control valve (the BOV in the rear) and cap off that hole, it could be the source of a boost leak if it fails and you don't need it.
EDIT: I noticed that you have a Profec boost controller, if you have that controlling the wastegate you can eliminate the precontrol/wastegate control solenoids. |
Thanks for the tips mdpalmer, wasn't aware that most of that could be deleted.. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I remove the UIM...
Is the primary BOV enough on it's own to relieve all the pressure in the Y-pipe? They both seem to be functional so I don't see any harm in keeping them both. |

They both seem to be functional so I don't see any harm in keeping them both. http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-...erOverview.htm As far as the primary BOV (aka air bypass valve, ABV, in mazda literature) being enough to relive pressure on its own, I haven't had a problem with mine yet. The real issue is that it doesn't leak under boost... if you're running 15 psi you may want to get an aftermarket one if you're paranoid. I don't think the stock one was designed to handle more than 14 psi with regular boosting, but that's a wild guess... |
Aaaand were back...
While hunting for a shop that had a bead roller dye large enough to do nearly 3" pipe I decided to continue with the thermal barrier and wrap the bottom of the IC that sits over the radiator and near the coolant hose: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0486.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0489.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0491.jpg SMIC installed in it's modified location w/ modified air duct: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0492.jpg Just how far off the SMIC was from the 'prefered' mount: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0493.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0499.jpg After talking to numerous shops that either wanted to weld a bead on the pipe or cut the ends off and reweld them on, I decided to just push forward and get the car moving again, so I devised a plan re-using the stock accordian piece with the included Trust elbow: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0494.jpg More shots of the modified stock duct w/ the modified Greddy duct: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0495.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0496.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0497.jpg In the end, the car went back together without too many hiccups and ran like a champ. Profect B showed peaks of 13.7 psi with the ultra-restrictive catback still on the car. I couldn't stand looking at the stock airbox anymore and got some flack for having it on, so I tossed on the ARC airbox, untill it sells of course ;) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...c/IMG_0500.jpg Next on the adjenda, HKS RS intakes and a free-flowing catback, then some dyno time. |

Custom SMB exhaust showed up yesterday, and I'm super impressed. The welds on this thing are pretty epic for a one-off, they look better then most production welds I've seen.
Oh and thanks Fedex for showing up at 5pm and not letting me get tuned **shakes fist** Now I have a true 3" system (GReddy downpipe, custom catless midpipe and SMB custom catback) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...t/IMG_0501.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...t/IMG_0502.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...t/IMG_0503.jpg Installed: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...t/IMG_0504.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...t/IMG_0506.jpg I'll get some daylight pics w/ video up shortly. Tone resembles the Blitz system I used to have on my WRX, nice and deep tone with no raspyness. |
I dig the exhaust! Nice car, seems like a quality build so far!

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but what is the purpose of using heat tape underneath the Extension Manifold? Is there some kind of advantage, or does it prevent something from happening? |
Used to prevent heatsoak of the bottom of the manafold

In the Torque brace video, was someone playing with compressed air, or was that noise coming from the motor? Does anyone else hear that? Could that be a vacuum/boost leak?
Other than that, car sounds great! |
I hear it too. Seems strange that the noise goes away with higher RPMs. Either that or the engine/exhaust is drowning out the hiss......
|
That exhaust is sick!
|
wow.... very nice exhaust!!!
