Big block chevy?

Does anyone have the dimensions of a big block chevy? Or any pictures of an FD running one? I want to put a 427, with an M22 muncie rock crusher transmission in my car (if I can find that setup.... Good luck huh?) Anyways, if I keep the car, I want to put a bigblock in it, and don't tell me about turning, because I don't care, I like drag raceing

OK found that a vortec gen VII block at the valve covers is about 27" wide. And just under 31" long. In the FD engine bay I've got about 30" between the strut towers, I think I could shoehorn that bitch in there. But being 30" long, it was sit wayyyyy forward. Like the middle of the engine would be over the steering rack

What do you think? I'm looking to build a drag car that I can drive.

There are plenty of small block, LSX based, 427s out there through various vendors on LS1Tech. A big block MIGHT be able to fit but its really pointless, especially if you are limiting yourself to a 427. If you have the money for that setup, you will see more than enough power with a darton sleeved 427 or even a C5R based long block. Good luck.

I have looked into it and here is Mike's recommendation take it for what its worh (probably about a buck 50)

Yes you could get it to fit. The problem is the torque you are going to make will be virtually impossible to hook up.

Buy a DART or Motown SBC and bore it out to 455 and drop that in. it will fit just like a LSX based motor other than the carb which you will have to cut the hood. If I had to do it over again I wouldnt have gone with a 408 LSX based motor I would have done a carbed Motown block SBC.

If you decide to do the big block and would be willing to make a 2nd cradle let me know, I know someone who would buy one

Yeah, but I want that insane torque.... That's what I like about the BB. And I'm not limited to a 427. I just know that it's a good base, and all that I need! If I could find one, I'd gen one of the gen VII 468's.... But they are usually more expensive, and probably not as many aftermarket parts.

I understand you WANT that much torque but have you tried to hook up that much torque?

Not to be a dick but have you ever driven a 2700lb car with 500ft/lbs and an IRS?

It is great to have 600ft/lbs but you wont be able to use it without going to a 4 link setup. Then you wont be legal in anything but an outlaw class so you might as weel do a tube frame front end and go all out.

Yeah, but I mainly just do local grudge racing on the weekends..... And I am looking at putting a 4 link in. So yeah

And my car has about 350 torque, and it's pretty wild on a dry road, won't hook for **** on a wet road......

I don't belive so.... I'm pretty sure the BB mounts are spread apart farther. But I could be wrong.

well the only problems i see with the bbc is the height. that was one of the things with my motor, and the dodge 440 is bigger than my 383 i had to cut into the firewall a good few inches, and since the fd has a smaller engine bay (well it seems that way anyway) you will have to modify the engine subframe to fit something as big. you might want to talk to hinson, or jimlab to see what he thinks about it.

as far as the sbc to bbc adapters. here are adapters, now if they would work with hinsons i dont know.

edit: nevermind that link was to a bbc to sbc. but you might want to try this.

i prefer this over the conventional motor mounts.

How about a ZL1 BBC? Fit that expensive car with an equally expensive motor!

Damn, that would be so cool!!

The bbc is not the smart choice, it's heavy and requires a single plane manifold, 2"+ headers, etc to make big power. You'd probably be better off with a sbc. Just get a dart tall deck sbc and run this: http://www.speedomotive.com/SBC%2045...RANK%20KIT.htm That's your 450 ci.

Also you could run carb but there are many aftermarket efi setups available so you don't HAVE to run a carburater since it's kind of old technology even though people like it for the simplicity. Let's face it efi is superior and is you're spending big $$$ on your motor, you might as well make it efi..

Make sure your committed either one you pick because they will probably nickel and dime you to death since it's uncharted territory..
