1983 to 1985 pinion flange
Can anyone give me a part number, source or interchange for the 1983 to 1985 larger pinion flange. I have a granny's driveshaft which has the larger flange with replaceable u joint that they recommended for my 1981 LSD rear. I have had no luck finding the pinion flange.

I have the driveshaft from Granny's with the large replaceable u joint and large flange. I need the Pinion flange for the rear to use the driveshaft.

It is not the same as FC. I will check tonight if it is the same as Miata, but I can tell with certainty that it is the same as the Kia Sportage had on its front driveshaft, since I have used several Sportage front pumpkins in an RX-7 and my driveshaft bolts right up. Furthermore, one of said diffs came with a driveshaft chunk, and I used said driveshaft chunk as a sample for machining a (somewhat rare) Ford 9" pinion FLANGE (not yoke) to bolt up to the Mazda driveshaft. Works great.
(okay, I kind of think it is funny that I am posting in the V8 subforum about flanges for the Mazda 7" rearend, a device I went away from because I kept breaking them with a N/A 13B.... and then my first outing with the Ford 9", I trashed it and had to completely rebuild it...)

The 8.8 is lighter than the 9", but you can make the 9" lighter still. (IIRC mine is only 30lb or so heavier than the 7") The 9" is also silly cheap to buy parts for since it is the generic NASCAR diff. Gearsets and diffs are stupid cheap for lightly used high end hardware. Can't get that with an 8.8. Aluminum pumpkin was $400 new, 4.44 ultralight REM polished gears were $150 shipped, way cool race-grade lightweight Locker style centersection was only $200. And I also have a 5.43 gearset and just picked up a 2.75 set for basically free...

No idea what Sportages exactly were involved. The first generation models from the very late 1990s/early 00s. The second generation and newer were transverse engine so no front pinion flange.
1.8 Miata is a no go. I have a Miata driveshaft on hand. It will pilot into an '83-85 flange, which is good, but the bolt pattern is about 10mm larger, which is bad. You could probably redrill a Miata pinion flange to the FB bolt pattern if you really had to.

The housings and bearings are the weak spot. The housings flex all over the place, eventually it twists the pinion so high you get u joint angle problems. And the flex kills the already-weak outer bearing, and the axles eventually give up on being rotated while the housing is going banana, and the ends break off.

Same part number from 1995 to 2002 so based on the info you have about the driveshaft and flange compatibility this is most likely the flange I need. As soon as it arrives I will give it a try and report back. I know this isn't the best setup for a v8 conversion but I just want to get the car moving under its own power for a while and see if I like it before going to the ford rear and the wheel bolt pattern hassle.

What wheel bolt hassle? Need custom axles no matter what rearend you use, when you have them made just have them made to whatever bolt pattern you want.
My axles are 4x4.5 and they are cut so I can use Volvo S40 rear rotors, which weigh nothing and cost like $10.

I am using a 1981 LSD rear. It still has the early pattern with lug bolts and disc brakes. I can use the 2 sets of early wheels that I already have.

Yes that's what I am looking for. I think I have the right part on order for a Sportage front differential companion flange. If it don't work out i'll take you up on your offer. Thanks

Ok so the pinion flange for the Kia sportage finally arrived and it's perfect. So if anyone is thinking of using the Granny's driveshaft with the large replaceable joints this flange will work to replace the small diameter flange on the third member.
