1st time at the track with the T2!! SUCKED!!

Last night I went up to Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, WI for the Real Street Drags and had fun, but didn't run to well. I ran a 14.3 @95.01mph. with a 60' time of 2.356(horrible). This is what i expected but it's not what i was shooting for.

The track was sticky especially it being sticky Thursday, but it was in the mid 50's all day and getting colder as the night went on. My mods are s5 rebuilt motor with a mild street port ,5k miles. Full Racing Beat exhaust, fcd, ACT stage 3 S/S clutch, K/N drop in filter, and 05' evo rims and tires which are 17" enkei's with yokahoma tires not sure of the exact size, but they are pretty sticky. Im also not sure what Im boosting at because i don't have a boost gauge and the stock boost gauge gives incorrect reading due to the FCD. So im thinkin 9 to 10PSI.

All night i had trouble launching, as you can see by my 60' time. It was either wheel hopping or spinning them. I had let some air out thinking my tires where at 28psi and ran about 5 times like that. But when my friend came with the tire pressure gauge, i checked them just to make sure and they where at 42 psi(SIGH!). So i lowered them to 25psi and started launching at 4K and bogged the next two times and after that they shut the track down so I couldn't work on my launch anymore.

I know the 60' times are crucial and if I get them down I will obviously run faster E.T.'s. So do you guys think this is about right considering my mods and the conditions i was racing in? Or should I be running faster?

I have already bought a walbro 255lph, 2 750cc injectors, a front mount intercooler, and a BNR stage 3. Im trying to get a stand alone but i dont have the money right now, I have a blue emanage do you guys think i should use right now or just wait for the stand alone?

Thanks for your time and i appreciate any responses, ISAAC

So you're running the stock intake tube to your turbo right now? Open that up, and it'll help a lot...but I'd say with some better launches (2.0 or faster) you'll be close to a 13.9-14.0 @ 95-96.

Your traps should be more like 100mph.
The car should do high 13's or middle 13's.
People think drag racing is easy - it's not, unless you're a natural.

It sounds like you had problems with the launch.
Your 60' times show it.
Get it down to at least a 2.1xx, and then start worrying about everything else.
You need to just tweak your launch technique at this point.
Throwing more power when you can't launch good will usually just make it worse.

How are you launching the car?

4000 with lots of clutch slip may be fine, you may want 5000. that ACT should stand up to it. RX7's are difficult to launch, but once you get the hang of it it can produce some very quick 60' times.

22psi tire pressures on radials may be OK, but those wheels aren't helping you either. 17's suck

And if you have the stock intake tube, WOW, get rid of it! There's a seat-of-the-pants difference, it's gotta be one of the best bang-per-buck mods there is. The home-depot intake/vented BOV is under $40. But get a boost gauge first, and make sure you aren't making more than 12PSI under any circumstances.

You'll love having a full standalone, sell the emanage, get a megasquirt or microtech.

Yes unfortunatley Im still running the stock intake tube, i was running open air box on the last two runs when i bogged real bad.

I know i need to work on the launch, this was my first time launching a rear wheel drive car at the track and it was alot harder then i thought it would be. It also felt as if it where dying up at the top of 3rd gear, myabe my boost was dropping down but i can't really tell with the stock gauge. I have an autometer and i will put it on soon. I PROMISE!! Dont worry i wont add those mods until the winter time.

I was launching at 4k, but wasn't slipping the clutch as much as i should have. Im going to try 5k next time with some clutch slip and hopefully i can get a good launch. This is probably obvious but if i make an intake do i still have to worry about those vaccume lines? And if you guys could give me any kind of direction on how to make one it would be very helpful. I aslo have a greddy type-S bov if that means anything to you. I was looking at megasquirt but they dont make them for the S5 right??

Well i appreciate all your guy's comments, keep them coming.

Megasquirt is a full stand alone system....I've not jacked with one, but from what I understand you can make a megasquirt work for any car.

This really doesnt have naything to do with you, but I dragged my car last year(first time at the track). At first I was running 14.2. Then I started playing with my launch technique and the tire pressure. Then started running 13.8-13.9 consistant. The last run the track was about to close so I went full out. burned out my tires for like, 3 seconds. didnt have the greatest launch but nailed a 13.7 @ 102mph.

I was launching between 3-4000rpm and slipping the clutch out. My tires are sumimoto(whatever theyre called) and my clutch was slipping in 3rd gear. So I dont understand why my car was running"that" fast. I had 85k on the motor and running 9psi. My mods arent that extensive, just a RB turboback, modded TB RTEK 1.5 and an HKS filter.

try working on your launch and tire pressure. I found popping the clutch didnt do much good.

on 7" slicks i launch at 6500, slipping the clutch slightly and pull 1.6XX 60fts
and i have an ACT clutch as well.....

Honestly when you feel what a fast 60ft feels like coming out of the hole compared to like a 2.2-2.3 you will be amazed..... i know i was

I was running 2.3-2.4 60fts on street tires with a ton of wheel spin at only 4k launches. I barrowed a set of slicks and put them on.... launched the same way at 4k and damn near killed the engine..... Next run launched at 7k and damn near lost my lunch it came out of the hole so hard with a 1.601

When you get your launch figured out drag racing is fun as hell

i would get set of 15 with some 50 profiles on it helps the gearing. big wheels look nice but not to good for racing.

I thinking that you are going to runn that my brother had that same set up in his car t2 s5 pretty much the same thing you had and ran about a low 14 so it isn't bad if you have a boost controller you can probably get more out of it and take probably like a sec to 3 i don't know How much you can use on a turbo so don't worry you just need to mess around and find stuff.

your car is almost the same spec as mine, except i've got a hks induction kit. I run 15 inch wheels from a convertable helps with the gearing. i ran a 13.25 so you should be able to get about the same if you sort some wheels and tires out.

Ya i was thinking about getting some 15inch vert rims and throwing some kind of sticky tires on there. My car will definetley be under construction within the next couple weeks, putting on some sort of stand alone, but not sure wich one yet. Any suggestions? I will also be putting on my BNR stg3 and a few other mods as well. And hopefully whoever i get to tune it will fix the break up it was having at the top of 3rd.

Thanks guys for everything, look forward to your replys,
isaac.

My MT ETstreets fit perfectly on stock TII rims. While holding the two-step at 6000 RPM I can replicate 1.6 60 foots all day long.

Not only that, but when you get up to HP levels such as mine (which I know you will be hitting soon), drag racing without slicks is downright DANGEROUS.
