your opinion on wheels

What is (in your own opinion) the best looking, light weight, durable wheel out there now? I heard the ssr competitions are the best looking and lightest wheels available for an FD. I want to get them in 17x10 and 17x9 or 9.5 for the front. Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Comps are only available in +8.5, +9.5, and shouldn't be considered super durable.

The SSR GT-2s are on closeout right at the Tire Rack in 18x9.5 +50 offset (perfect) for only $350/wheel! These are gorgeous semi-forged wheels at under 20 lbs each that only cost $1400/set. I really wish I could afford to take advantage of the close-out deal right now....

After the GT-2s, I really like some of CCW's new one-piece rims. Custom offsets for perfect fitment.

I like my Fikse FM5s, although they arent nearly as light as stock when you look at the wheel/tire combo.

I looked far and wide for my wheels, and considered and researched nearly everything on the planet. Your taste may vary, but for me, I found that even in premium forged wheels, ultra light weight was often at odds with "best looking".

If your taste tells you that Volk TE37's, or CE28N's with all of Volks fucked up color finishes like white and bronze are cool, or you like the universal lug look, you're cool. They're super light, buy 'em.... 15-16 lbs for a 17x9.5 or so.

SSR comps are a decent looking wheel, but not on the high end level of some of the stuff out there.... but they are super light. 15.9 lbs for a 17x9.5!! These are my track wheels.

So, If you don't mind adding 3-4 pounds a wheel, THEN you can get into stuff that I would consider "great looking" with high end finishes, and sophisticated looks.

at the 18-19 lb range, you can get 17" Fikses, Kenesis, BBS LM's, and other multipiece 17" wheels.

My BBS are 18-19 for an 18" wheel (one-piece). That did it for me. Great looks, 17" weight in an 18" wheel. They are my road wheels.

at the 20-21 lb range, you can start looking at 18" multipiece wheels like Fikse, etc.

The one new thing to look into are the CCW one-piece wheels. They're only available in full polished, which I wouldn't want, but they look nice, and are probably a little lighter than many multipiece wheels, since they're a monoblock wheel. Maybe John will do different finishes.

I personally would put the CCW regular multipiece wheels more in the catagory with the SSR's and Volks. Light, inexpensive, but at the cost of asthetics. I really have never thought they look that great... compared to Fikse, BBS, etc. The centers are too small, the hardware looks cheap, and they have a "handmade" look to them. No offense to anyone, they're a great wheel, and I'd definately have a set for the track, but not as a road wheel.

Here are mine.... Work wheels VS-XX 3 piece 18X8 front and 18X10 rear.... I love them!

They kind of look like the BBS LMs... I bought work wheels because I wanted to keep the FD all from Japan....

I have heard alot of people say this already, even though BBS was the company to make the wheels for the FD in the first place.

I also like the JDM exclusivity, rarity and looks of the Work wheels VS-XX 3 piece over the German BBS LMs...

In the USA the BBS is a more common wheel as opposed to the Japanese Work wheels....

I'd buy the BBS LMs for my wife's Mercedes-Benz...

IMO... Over all the FD is a rare Japanese car. To enhance its rarity with an after market wheel, I chose the a Japanese wheel used in professional racing in Japan... WORK Wheels....

Hmm, I feel that in Japan an Rx-7 is actually a pretty common car as it is also in Europe. While as in North America it is rarer. SO I chose the Fiske's, plus the 24 hr Lemans credentials help.

The FD a "pretty common" car in Japan and Europe?... I disagree... Maybe there are more of them in those places because they made them up to just recently, but definitely not common.... As far as I'm concerned, I live in New York City, the most populated city in North America... Here I'll see an FD twice a year not including my own which is parked in my garage for most of the year....

Slight correction: Enkei made the wheels for the first series FD. Mazda only used BBS wheels for some models in the later years of production.

Well what I meant was in those two parts of the world the duration of production was much longer so more chances of seing one. I don't know about Japan. But an old friend in Vienna and Moscow says she sees them all the time.

Btw if anyone wants to buy my wheels I am open to ideas. I have seen the retail price go from 4200-4600$ but I am logical and do not expect to keep that much. So any offers will remain in consideration.

hey I'm from Vienna too !
But I have to say I don't see RX7's very often.
Once 2 FD's passed me, and one other time I saw one parking, and I saw 3 or 4 at car events ....in the last 5 years
I think about 5 FD's are in Vienna right now.
But they get more and more imported from japan.

sorry for offtopic
