Widest Tire On 17X7
I currently have 215/45-17 Yokohama AVS1 100 on all four corners. I would like to know the widest tire I can safely run on a rim that is 7" wide.
Thanx

Depends on the tire model you wnat to run..
Check the specs for eachtire on tirerack. they specify the "acceptable range of wheel widths" for each tire model... Go with what teh manufacture of teh tire suggests...

Most tire manfs list a 17x7" wheel as being the minimum acceptable for a 225/45 17 tire. That is as wide as you can go, although functionally, they will be little different from your existing tires.

What happenes is that as you go wider tire widths, the sidewalls buldge in at the bottom.. making sort of a donut looking wheels/tire combo.. like on those old sand buggys.. this has the effect of reducing the sidewalls resistance to flexing because the cords are already flexed.. sometimes you want that.. like in offroad tires.. but you don't want it on a sports car
225 are about it..
Also... you'll get into fitment problems on the front with anything bigger if you are running stock offsets.

245s on a 7 will handle worse than 225s on a 7...

It also depends on the sidewall height / aspect ratio. For example: A 265/70-17 light truck tire fits on a 7" wheel, but the widest BFG KD that fits on a 7" wheel is a 225/45-17.
