It's all about opinion once you start buying the higher end stuff...HKS and Apex'i both make high quality coilvers, but one shouldn't discount the JIC units either, as they get good reviews.

A lot of the top quality coil-overs are too stiff for the street. When you say "best", best for what? Street driving? Road racing? A little of both?

From my research, the only decent looking coil-overs I've found that have reasonable spring rates and maintain equal wheel rates are the Tein HA and the JIC FLT-A2. The JIC are much better than the Tein HA in the fact that ride height is independent of spring pre-loading. Of course, they cost more too.

BTW, if you want coil-overs just for street driving, save your money. They are way overkill for that purpose.

Rynberg, if seperate height adjustment is so desirable, then why do Koni 2812s, and GC Advanced Design not have this feature? I looked at set-ups used on Indy cars, Trans Am, Grand Am, and LMP. I saw almost no cars with this feature. I wonder why, I am no expert, but if that was important, you can be sure those guys would be running a similar set-up. Someone educate me...........

I used JIC FLT-A2 for autocross.
I think that the rear spring is too stiff for autocross. More suitable for race track.
Ride quality in setting 1 is good for rough road.

Don't get GAB/ Koni with GC coilover conversion. These tends to ride rough. I think it is rougher than JIC.

Apexi and HKS is good. I ride in Apexi N1, does not feel stiff at all.
I saw HKS at rotaryextreme site, and it looks good.

Carl Byck, I am not too sure but formula cars (such as Indy cars) are push rod on board suspension...maybe they change the height at the rods not the shock itself. Also there are some upper mounts that not only can change camber but ride height as well.

I have seen few TOP end suspension and they can not use the shock height adjustment because they are usually two or three way (don't know too much about it but something needed, hahaha). one-way the shock height adj. can be possible because nothing is attached at the bottom but two or three way setup has a piggy back which makes the shock height adj. feature diffitcult to use. and the race cars are usually low or super low so i don't think they change height no more than 1 inch.

With koni/GC for instance, there is no "pre load" on the springs as suggested... they are in fact loose when the shock is fully extended, no matter how its adjusted, so I don't really see how a seperate adjustment is necessary.

The Koni 28-series and the GC/AD shocks + coilover kit DO have ride height adjustment. The sleeve on the GC kit that sits on top of the shock body is threaded, and the Koni 28-series is a threaded shock body. That allows you to move the spring collar; thereby adjusting ride height.

Depending on what you do with the car, there are many options for "the best" coilovers. For racing, I'd recommend the following ....

Koni 28-series
Koni 30-series
Penske 8100-series
Penske 8600-series
DMS 50-mm "Giant" Piston
Advanced Design

Tri-Point uses Hypermax springs with the GC coilover kit on their Koni coilovers. A.R.E. uses Eibach springs with their Penskes. The DMS shocks uses their own in-house spring. And the Advanced Design uses the same GC coilover kit with Eibach springs.

Keep in mind, these are high dollar shocks with race-inspired valving. They may not suit your city driving needs (depending on your tolerance level).

I've been extremely pleased with my HKS Hyperdampers at 25" height to top of wheelwells.

Zeal, endless, HKS Hiper Dampener II, APEXI or JIC. Any of these are top shelf components. If you planning on buying the best make sure they are tuned properly. Have them corner balanced and alignment done. Then if you touch the ride height. Corner balance and align it again!

The biggest waste of money I see used on street cars are coilovers. Unless you need them for wheel fitment or something just get Konis and some HKS springs. Bilstien HD's etc. I run the Bilsteins and my car rocks on the street and can still track the car! They are more durable than most Coilover set ups and I dont worry about adjustments. I have so mnay other things to tune on the car I didnt want to worry about Suspension tuning too!!
If your going to use them for Show purposes and drop the car to the ground at the car show and then raise it back up before you leave. The coilovers will provide just that ride height adjustment. Just dont expect them to perform on your way home. Unless you tune a coilover suspension they are probably worse than regular standard shocks struts.
ALWAYS CORNER BALANCE AND ALIGNMENTS for coil overs. otherwise its just a Part on your car you can brag about.

Dangit foo', I thought I told you lol. I think that the Tien RA coilover kit with the EDFC is the best IMO. I'm sorry but I'm hanging from Tien's nuts, just.....not......in the.....gay way....yeah.
