Question Wheels and Tires

I was wanting to know a good wheel and tire set up for my FD. I want it set up for street/drag. I don't want any bling rap video rims. Just something that will give optimal performance. Suggestions?

Hey, what up, dawg? Just droppin' in to help you out in your quest for knowledge. I'm also curious about what your fellow Seven owners are using for wheel/tire setups.

John said he recommends an Enkei 17" rim with a Yokohama Parada Spec II tire. That's just his opinion though.

Anyways, just letting you know I joined the forum to help you look for stuff.

I'll holla at you later.

Peace...
Kidd

Still in a state of shock over my new purchase. I thought someone was giving me some advice from what they used. Well it's good to know you're here. I wish someone would hit me up. Plenty of people have looked at it.

You should try and be at least a little more specific. There's a bazillion different combos out there. Some general guidelines such as what diameter rim you want, what sort of features you're looking for and how much you want to spend will help people make you a recommendation.

One thing I do not want to do is have a set up so damn big that they hit the wheel wells whenever I hit a bump. I think I'll go with 17's with a slightly lower profile sidewall to keep it as close to stock as possible. I don't know what the point is when the speedometer will be out of whack. I want something good for drag and street. I'm looking at spending a maximum of fifteen hundred dollars. I want something lighter than the stock wheels. I don't know much about changing up tires and wheels. I never had the money for aftermarket rims before.

Have you tried looking through the stickies in this section? Have you tried the search feature? There are tons of threads/posts with other people's setups. That's why nobody is answering you. That's also a pretty small budget for FD rims. Stock rims are 8" wide - no point in going thinner. When you get over 8 wide, prices get alot higher.

Why not just get a set of rear wheels with slicks and new tires for your stock rims. That would give you better time slips and a comfy street ride within your budget.

My bad. I'm not good with computers. This is the first and only forum website I have been to. I just need some basic info since I'm lacking it in the tire and wheel department. I've seen a lot of package deals for about a grand and under. My mustang owning friend told me what tires have worked for him. I wanted to hear from some other FD owners. Thanks for the advice. And I don't want just other peoples set ups. I want to know why, also. I can only know what I've been told and what I've read. And it's not much in the tire and wheel department.

The stock FD rims are about as good as you can get at their size point -- 16x8. You will not improve on their performance for a wheel+tire budget of $1500. Since you are new to your car, I would just stick with the stock wheels for now and put on some high quality 225/50 or 245/45 tires (Pirelli Pzero, Bridgestone S-03, Toyo T1-S, Yokohama AVS Sport).

For drag racing, buy another two stock rims and mount some drag radials on them. People sell stock rims all the time on the forum.

If you are set on an upgrade for near that price point, you should look at some SSR Competitions or GT-1s for light, reasonably priced rims. You will still be over your budget.

Please don't just slap on a cheap wheel+tire package. You will regret it, as you will actually lose performance in comparison to the stock setup. Unless you have a lot of experience with high-end sports cars, the stock wheels will provide more than enough performance for you.

And please do search the archives and use the search function. I'll give you a link to get started:

The package prices you're seeing at around $1000 are front wheel drive setups - as rynberg said, you will lose performance if you put a setup like that on your car.
reasons:
thinner wheels = thinner tire = less contact patch = less grip = slower

heavier = more rotational mass = slower

Best thing to do if you don't want to spend a lot of money is to keep the stock wheels and just put a good 245/45-16 tire on them.

If you want to step up to a 17" or larger diameter rim you really should keep at least an 8" width. You can get O.Z. Superleggera 17x8" for $280 a piece from tirerack.com and 245/40-17 Kumho MX tires for $127 a piece. That's $1628 plus shipping and basically you can fit the same width tire with a slightly thicker sidewall on the stock rims so it's mostly an aesthetic upgrade. The thinner sidewall will give you a bit more crisp feel on turn-in but there won't be a huge difference between a 245/45-16 of the same brand.

If you really want to upgrade then you're going to need a staggered fitment front/rear with very wide wheels and very wide tires. This is most definitely not going to fit into your $1500 budget.

Actually, looks like a SleepR1 fitment (search) is possible for a reasonable price with decent wheels and tires from discounttire now that they're carrying racing sparco and 5zigen. Not the greatest, but not bad at all for around $1600-1700. CCW's arent' much over that, are they?

$1800/set. Plus tires. For good fitment, high performance, 17" or 18" tires .... easily another $1000.
