quick update:
good news: tires are in but i have to wait till sat to have them installed. in the mean time i may spray some wheel paint on the bare aluminum to prevent any corrosion.

bad news: so i threw one of the rear wheels on for fun to make sure everyhting was ok and gave it a spin. what i found was
A) a bad rear wheel bearing or hub (ill have to check the other side tomorrow cause i didnt have time) and
B) more importantly, what seems to be about 1mm of runout on the back half of the rim +.5mm and -.5mm. even though these numbers are small, it definately worries me as the wheel is not entirely true. i dont know how big of a deal this will be at high rpm's as i no nothing of the subject... so i was hoping someone could chime in. im going to call weldcraft tomorrow as they are closed now. it may not be a big deal, but i dont like what i think im seeing. -Heath

so i took the rims in..... one of the rears has some good runout. its showing in the tire a bit. im going to have to call weldcraft and see how they will handle this. what the tire shop recommended was try it out on my other FD and see if i get any vibration.... if i feel any at speed then they will take them remove them for free, so i can send it in. that seems like a reasonable solution, but im going to be placing a concerned phone call to weldcraft monday expressing my concern.

they also found a flat spot on one of my fronts but it did not show too much in the tire being true. again, i wont know if it needs to be remedied until i try it out on my working 13b.

ill get some pics up soon. the R1R's look good (though there are specific warning stickers regarding tire compound... not storing in cold temps and 1/2 pressure when storing for extended periods of time). ill also find out soon what spacer ill need for the rear. stay tuned...

so the rears fit with no spacer actually. its a tight fit and i wouldnt run them with only 4mm of clearance between the tire and coilover, but they do fit. most likely ill get the 15mm spacer (even though i need a 10mm to keep the center line in the same place) cause you cant get a hubcentric ring for the 10's.

pics. (dont mind the dog butt hes my helper)

ok so latest update is.... i put the tires on my 13b FD to check for vibration (i called weldcraft and they said if there was any vibration they would rework the wheel)... luckily i didnt notice any vibration from the suspect wheel. im going to do a high speed run at some point to make sure that it the vibration doesnt appear at high speeds, but i took them up to 120 today and everything felt solid.

So, here's a few notes from what I've learned so far:
1) Once you get past toyos lawsuit-provoking slide-crash-and-burn release gel coat the R1R's are an amazing tire. I have t1s's on my miata but these are from a different planet. I've only put a little mileage on them so far and already I'm in love. The one downside to 140AA A tires is actually the sticky factor. They are so sticky that they pick up ANYTHING they touch. I could see some paint damage occurring from the junk flying off of these tires. When I transition in between lanes I can hear a spray of pebbles and other tiny particles that found its way inbetween the lanes being spit at the body work and wheel well. Other than that drawback i like the tires alot.

2) The car feels more planted, which I expected. Braking is better with the 255's up front.

3) Best part of all.... just for fun i decided to see if the 275's would fit in the front. They do. A 10mm spacer would give a little extra clearance, but they fit even as is. This got me to thinking... maybe ill have the other two rims done at some point and see if i can squeeze even more meat in the rear. I think its possible, but ill have to take more measurements. unfortunately, toyos next tire size in 17" is a jump all the way to a 315

and here's the 275 mounted up front just for fun... as you can see they fit rather nicely. maybe eventually these will be up front and ill widen the other 2 rims

I was planning on widening my rx8 wheels on my fd also. I think they are 8" wheels, dont know backspacing exactly. would you recommend widening them 1" or 7/8" like yours were, I know i have to run a wider spacer because i notice the wheel is backspaced more, but i think i can make them just as wide as yours or am i wrong.

find the backspacing and post it. depends on the tires you are using also. for the 275's... if i were to do it again... i would actually have them bring the wheels to 1.5" wider (in which case a 15mm spacer should bring the centerline back into alignment). for 275's i feel the tire looks a little too inverted.

They are 50mm of backspacing on the 8 wheels, i want to run a 275 also in the back.
