Wheel painting

Hey guys, I just stumbled across a set of 93 stock wheels with used SO-2's for $100, gonna pick them up in a couple of weeks to use as track/autocross wheels.

I was thinking of painting them black, maybe using some of this stuff (found in search)
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/wheel.html

Anybody have any other suggestions? I'm hesitant to have them powdercoated since they'll be track only wheels and I don't really see the point in spending all that money on track wheels.

It cost about $50 bucks here in LA to powdercoat a wheel. I am not sure how many cans of spray paint you need to finish all 4 wheels. Plus you need to clean up and prime the wheel for a proper spray paint job.

i just got done painting mine black. I used the same paint code on my car, brilliant black. and then i sprayed 2 coats of clear. They turned out great! I will post a pic as soon as i can get a hold of a camera. I am a trained painter, but if i were you and were just going to use them as track wheels i would just spray paint them and take the easy way out.

yeah, i'm not quite a trained painter, unless you count building models. I figured I'd try the stuff I linked above with some primer first and some clear after and that should be fine for what I'm going to do.

I bought 3 cans of spray( i did many coats), and 2 cans of clear coat. Mines came out great. They shine really nice.

1. clean wheels
I used Steel wool )Sos pads will do). and a stainless steel brush.

2. Degrease Wheels
I used a can of engine degreaser.

3. Dry Wheel
With cloth. make sure to get all the faces of the wheel.

4. Spray.
I did 6 light coats. and 10 regular coats. (depends on how good you are with the spray).

5. Clear coat
Clear coat is the sealer. I had a nice shine Before the clear coat. When you First spray it, it will look white. Don't worry it will dry clear. Spray as many as you feel confortable doin.

Pics of my finished product.

you shouldnt have a problem as long as the surface is dry and you spray enough coats.

I have found that if you run Hawk HP+ pads and never clean the wheels that they stay a nice gunmetal color all by themselves When I do clean them people swear I bought new ones!

when you paint the center caps. take them off and spray some adhesion promoter on them after you sand them. and then paint them seperate. you can get bull dog adhesion promoter at your local auto store. Thats what most people use when they paint plastics.

Damn it, I'm picking up these wheels next Saturday, and I can't find the black Duplicolor wheel paint anywhere, I can only find white, steel, graphite, bronze and clear. Anyone know where you can order this stuff online?

Damn it, I just got back from the auto store and I forgot this adhesion promoter. I do have some Krylon fusion black paint for plastics, think that will work?

I painted some bbs vert rims last weekend and they turned out awesome.

They do look better it person. Here is what I did to paint them. First clean them off really well. Next I just used 150 grit sandpaper to get the clearcoat off and then rinsed off the rims again. Dry the rims really well and then spray a nice coat of primer. Wait for the primer to fully dry and then mask what you need to. Then went over it with primer with the same 150 grit sandpaper to give it a rougher texture so the paint would stick easier. Wipe down the rim to make sure you get all the particles out. I used high gloss black duplicolor engine paint. I did two coats and then did 2 coats of clear. Came out pretty nice.

Since I had another thread about the wheels I posted pics in there too, but thought I'd post a pic of the finished product in here:
