Wheel offset and spacers questions

I maybe answering my own question here but I am trying to get the best handle on this. First off FD wheels are 16x8 w/ +50mm offset, right?

So say I have a 50mm offset wheel and the is 12mm clearance from the rim lip to the suspension arm. If I add a 10mm spacer would that give me 22mm clearance from the suspension arm? Or say I get a different off set wheel say 40mm (16x8 wheel), would that also give me 22mm clearance from the suspension arm? And I assume a 60mm (16x8 wheel) would give me only 2mm of clearance?

If I where to use a 9" wide wheel, I would need an offest of 40mm to keep the same 12mm of spacing? This is were I am really confused when changing wheel size and such with respect to clearance with suspension components/body parts.

Adding spacers minuses the offset, e.g., +50 plus 10mm spacer = +40
