^yup.....that is the best bet. however, i HAD run some 295/30's about a year ago......however, i guess that you do know that differen tire brands filll the wheel better. sometimes it is simply a trial and error thing that you must do for your own satisfaction....

Look at the tire spec sheets (many are available on TireRack.com or the tire manufacturer's web site) for the tire models you are considering. Most 285/30-18 list 10" as the minimum rim width, but there are a few that go down to 9.5". The short sidewalls don't give you a lot of lee-way (sp?).
I think Michel (can't remember his forum name -- rx7tt or something like that) is running 18x9.5" Volks with 285/30-18 tires on the street -- you might contact him for guidance.
Also, wheels and tires have different real widths -- my 9.5" Volks seem to be the same width as the tread of my 265/40-17 S-03 tires, but my 10" CCW rims are actually wider than the widest point of my 285/30-18 BFG g-Force R1 tires.
