It's a wear indicator. When enough pad is worn away it will contact the rotor and "squeal" and let you know you need to change out pads before it's metal on metal contact.

put it on the inside as the wear is usually higher there.

I think it will only go in one way.

hi guys thanks for the replies.
1) there is a soft black plastic that it is sticked at the backside of the pads.it is visible at the fotos.
should i remove it?this is only at the fronts . the rears came with aluminiun sims but what is this soft plastic at the fronts?

2)there are two OEM sims per pad .one stainless and one steel that is very corroded.
can i leave it out?
what is these sims for? i assume that the stainless one witch have an angle cut is for presure equilazation. the other(the corroded) is a flat piece. is it needed?

thanks again!

1. The soft stuff on the back of the pads is used for noise suppression. It stops vibration of the pads at certain frequencies which in turn makes them queiter. It's the same idea with using brake lube on the backing plate contact points. If you remove it, it's not going to hurt anything, you just might have noisier brakes.

2.Were there two shims on your car before you removed the pads? Or is one set of shims new that came with the pads? You should only have one set of shims on the brakes. So i would use the un-corroded set. The shims serve pretty much the same purpose as the black stuff on the front pads.

Hope this helps.

hi,
the old pads had two sims per pad.one large and on smaller with an angle cut.the smaller is stainless and it is intact.the other is coroded.as i looked on the mazda manual, these sims comes with the factory setup.
now, the pads that are ebc reds have this plastic material and i am confused.i came in contact with the ebc team here and they told me that if the pads i received came with the plastik i should not use the factory sims.
hope i make myself clear so you could help me.
i do not trust these guys and i would like your opinions.
many thanks.
