What R compound?

Roadracers help me out, what tire choice really elevates your grip and works well for the FD?and take some street abuse.
I,m not worried about wear and could go on a set of 18x9.5 or a 17x 8.5,s.

I have searched the Kuhmo 700 there is a new "unshaved " Kuhmo available but it looks like its a track only tire? the Porche guys are pretty into the Advan a48 and would be available in a 285/30.
Thanks Carl.

For road/track use, I've always heard that the Toyo RA1 is the best option.

Carl,

For the money, these look hard to beat.

Wow, those Dunlop tires must be brand new. How the hell are they selling them so cheaply? Those are significantly cheaper than street tires in those sizes.

At a 60 treadware rating I,m assuming that would be a big improvement over a So3 or T1s? correct??
Has anyone run them and can compare them to the other R compounds? although they need only to be average to sell well at that price point!

The problem with R compounds on the street is not wear, it is heat cycles. I have tried running R compounds on the street due to the power outputs of my cars. The problem is after ~20 days of daily driving your typical R compound tire has far less traction than even a standard street tire. The only time you get back the "R" compound performance after that point is when you get them "up to temperature" ie ~170 or above. You will never see those temps except road racing. Typical tire temps on a ~85* ambient autocross ~60 second course are around 140*, so you can see, you wont be at those temps on the street. The only POSSIBLE exception would be the RA1, which seems to get better with wear, but not neccessarily with heat cycles. I would advise BFG TAKD, or Kumho MX unless you will be driving the car infrequently. Carl

I bought the Dunlop Super Sport races and love em. Super Cheap too.

i got the 245/35/18 front and 285/30/18 rear, they are great. I drive them on the street and also autoX with them. I run autoX's with them once a month and street em in between events. If you plan on only racing with them have them shaved, otherwise they're fine. Heat up quick and hold temp decent too. After my first autoX the surface of them looks just like my Kumho V710s did. (not bald, but looks like chewed bubblegum with little rocks stuck in them). They also pickup rocks bad on the street so no one can drive behind you.

I like them better than my Kumho V700 Victoracers if that gives you any idea.

I also ran kumho V710's (275/40/17) before and loved those on the track but not so much on the street, they're a bit too sticky/grabby for street, plus absolutely zero standing water tolerance.

Let me know if you want pics.

Makes sense. To minimise this I would have a track set only

Rx treme,pics would be great!
you have a 2nd gen in your avitar, fc or fd?
You shure you have 285/30/18,s because Tire Rack site says the largest size is 265/35/18.
285 would be killer all round

Talking

285/30/18 IS available.Tire Rack price ,$674, heat cycled and shaved.WOW!
Can I make it fit up front on a Rpo1, 18x9,5 44mm offset?
I have my coilovers on their lowest setting running a Toyo t1s 255/35 now with some room.
I think its going to be too wide though.
I,m going to test fit a 265/35 and see how that works tonight,if it does then I will go 265 all around.
After trolling around on some different forums people are generally very positive about this tire with one caveat, tirewall flex,or a "marshmellow" feel.I guess this is relative to a all out race tire so a shorter sidewall would be an advantage.

I have been running the Toyo RA-01 on my RX-7 for long time now on the street, doing weekend duty (not a daily driver). They do "fade" some after a while, but by that point, they are pretty bald anyhow, so it's time for a new set. IMO, even after quite a few heat cycles they are still close to a top of the line street tire. I also do a little track driving and they work well there too

As Carl Byck said, the R compounds only REALLY start to work well if you are driving the **** out of them. It is very difficult to keep even the RA-01 in the working temperature range on the street. You pretty much have to attack every turn as hard as you can and have a lot of them in a row. Driving over 100-120 mph also seems to warm them up ok. But as soon as you swoosh through your favorite twisty road and slow down... the tires cool off quickly too.

I drive them on the street to reduce wheelspin, not because I think I actually can keep them properly warmed up all the time (I try my hardest though!)

Seems like a waste of money to me to run R compound on the street, why not just by some high performance street tires? You should be driving hard enough on the street to need that amount of grip anyway IMO.

R compound aren't a waste for me since I only put about 3k miles on my car per year at most. And I love em on the windy roads around where I live

MP5,

Yes this is on a FC (the one in the Avitar) Yes I purchased one of their last sets of 285/30's and they had to come from Indiana warehouse. They weren't much more than the 265's.

I'll see if i can get some close up pics soon. i have these for now tho.
