I recently installed 18" CCW wheels on my car (with 285/30-18 tires), and would like to have a spare available for any long trips. Anyone out there come up with a solution for this?

 

tire repair kit and some tire slime i dont think you'll be able to fit that 18" in the trunk

Jramosrx7- I love Half Moon Bay area. I used to live in Santa Cruz for college. Me and the UCSC swim team used to go out there and camp all of the time. Plus I loved those roads for testing out my new motor mods

 

The object of upgrading wheels is that you have a larger wheel with a smaller tire wall height. Basically you maintain a constant overall diameter. This also keeps you from screwing up your gas mileage, throwing off your odometer and speedometer, etc. etc. My guess is you have maintained that overall diameter and you can still use your stock spare tire.

 

You know, you're right!!! The 285/30-18 is only very slightly different (forget which way) than the stock. I recall checking the speedometer error website and found them to very nearly the same.

 

Why you take your FD for long trip?? You wanna to test your new twins?

 

As others have pointed out, unless you have bigger brakes than stock, the OEM 16" spare is fine to use.

 

Thought of that after I posted my reply, so went out to fit it. Doesn't fit on the fronts with the M2 Wilwood kit, but the rear is OK. Guess I'll carry the spare and a can of slime.

 

I think some of the newer JDM cars had a larger 17" spare due to upgraded brakes from the factory (pretty sure the Spirit R had them). You might want to talk to Jason at JT-Imports. He may be able to hook you up with one of these spares.

As one of the earier replys stated , the only thing that matters is o.d. But, look in your original car manual, do noy put the spare tire on the rear as it may destroy your rear end

 

Easy, you get a AAA card and call for assistance when you get a flat. Remember your check book to because replacing a blown out 18" tire in the middle of no where America isn't cheep.

 

One more thing you need to bring on a road trip is a tool kit. This can save your a$$.

 

I have AAA, and I always carry a good toolkit. Just looking for a way to get on the road a bit quicker if needed.

 

The JDM 17" spare is very expense at apprx $700 imported. Other options are to look at spare wheels from other car companies. i.e. I have an Acura TL-S, its Brambo brakes are about same size as JDM '99 brakes.

It has a nice alumium (sorry not yellow) spare in size T145/70-17 (~ 25 in dia same as ours) with 45mm offset and 114.3x5 bolt pattern, so should fit, sorry i have not tried it yet, but it must be alot cheaper assuming you don't buy the car.
