What are the best all-around performance tire?

Will be daily driven on the street, as well as aggresively street and drag strip driven (only occasionally).

Which of these tires would be best:

Dunlop SP Sport FM901

-WR Speed Rating
-$69 per tire

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712

-WR Speed Rating
-$76 per tire

Yokohama Parada Spec 2

-VR Speed Rating
-$84 per tire

Kumho ECSTA 711

-HR Speed Rating
-$60 per tire

They will be going on the car pictured in my avatar, and like i said my demands arent racing tires they are just all around wet/dry performance.

Thank you
~Geoff

Re: What are the best all-around performance tire?

not a fan of dunlops myself, the ones i played with werent very predictable as far as when they let go they let go like a ****

the parada spec II's got great reviews, i havent tried em or know anyone that has, but theyre supposed to be wayyyyy better than the spec I's. the spec I's were ricer tires, right up yer alley :-P

as for kumho, all i have to say is woot woot. 712's are kick *** tires for the money. 711's suck, might as well get sumitomo htr-200's hehe

you left out azenis though. thats another good option if you arent too worried about wet weather.....

what size are you runnin?

Not any of those, that's for sure.

If you need great all around dry/wet performance, you should be looking at:

*Bridgestone S-03s (best in rain)
*Toyo T1-S
*Dunlop SP8000 or 9000 (poorer dry than 8000, but better wet)
*Yokohama AVS Sports
*Michelin Pilot Sports

Some of the above might not be available in your size, depending on what you're running.

Kumho 711/712 tires suck. Almost every FD owner I know that has run them, hates them. The Kumho MX is new and has gotten good reviews so far.

Good advice. S03s are the way to go for wet and dry performance. What sizes are you looking at getting?

And Kumhos blow donkey *****. My dad mounted them on his 7, against my advice. He was happy with them......for all of 1000 miles.

LOL. That's one of the funniest things I've seen. Bro, none of those tires are in the category that you're asking.

IF reworded, what's the best of the cheapest tires out there then these would be candidates. For cheap good tires go with the Falken Azenis.

What wheel size are you running and what offset?? I'll recommend accordingly. Possibly run a 215/45/16 azenis.

LAter, rishie

Listen to the RynMan and GoodMAn bro. They know just as well as I do what we're talkin about. Your fellow forum tire and wheel EXPERTS. hehe.

Out of the ones you've chosen the FM901 is the stickiest, quickest wearing. The rest are crap if not just street driven. I hear the spec 2 is better now, but I still have my doubts. I do like that they're assyms so you can rotate all around. An added economical benefit.

Jeez guys dont have to be so harsh.

I have NO money right now, and cant afford friggin hundred+ doller per tire rims.

Forget i asked, jesus.

and to answer some of the less in-your-face questions, i'm runing 205-40-16, and cant go any wider than that.

16x7 rims, not totally sure of the offset, i'm thinking 40

I like the 712's, they are great, especially for the money. Alot oof other guys that i race with that have 7's and Z's run Pilot Sports. They are expensive as ****, but well worth it. They fuckign grip when you get them warm.

Lol yea, I would say the Parada Spec's are your best bet. Some of the guys need to lighten up, when you post your looking for cheap tires, that probably means you don't want anything high end...

You forgot to check out the Yokohama ES100's. Good cheap tire. Better than the Kumho 712's. The Sumitomo HTR Z's are decent cheap tires ... but I don't know that they have your size. But if you're truly worried about wet/dry performance ... you should be sparing no expense on your tires. They make ALL the difference.

yup. they *are* the only part of the car in contact with the road, after all. Check out the "totalled" thread in the 3rd gen section---guy slid off the road into a ditch and destroyed a beautiful silver/red int FD, and his tires look bald as all hell. A bud of mine wrecked a CYM in the rain with bald tires, and my dad got into a wreck (almost totalling his 7) b/c of bald tires.

A little money spent now can save you a lot down the road.....

I'm running Falken Azenis Sports, can't say enough good things about them. Great value for the money. Angry looking tread blocks.

To be fair none of those incidents are the fault of the tires. It's the driver's responsibility to maintain the car and make good decisions.

ioTus I assume you are shopping price with what you have listed. I would safely rule out the Supra 712; I absolutely hated them. From info I have heard from others go with the Parada but realize they will get noisy.

Hey Geoff, just to lend my suggestions in here...

I run the Dunlops on my Protege (because most don't MAKE the right size for it, seriously 195/50-16? WTF is that?) and they're alright, but frikken loud... Not bad for performance, but nothing to write home about..

The 711's aren't really performance tires, I doubt you'd be happy with those...

the 712's are marginally better, but aren't all that sticky and are actually heavy as hell if I recall.

I've heard good things about the SpecII's as others have said, but I don't know how they are for longevity...

All of that being said, I looked at the same and ended up with the Yoko ES100's and love them... I think I paid liek $74 each from tire rack..

Also, 205/40-16 is too short for our cars.. You should go with the 205/45-16 not the 40. Otherwise your speedo will be off, and it will just look funny..

Moral of the story; Sure, there are better tires out there if you want to spend the $$, but the ES100's are the ones that most people have agreed upon as the best bang for the buck tire... I doubt you'll be disappointed.
(my dad's miata, my coworkers 911, another coworkers 98 cobra, my Rx7, and a few other I kow all have them & love 'em)

FYI, out of all of those you listed, only the Dunlops are made in sized that would fit these cars...

the rest might be good tires, but aren't going to help this discussion.

Actually, the Toyo T1-S is too. And so is the Pirelli Pzero Nero, which I forgot to put on the list.

ioTUS: If you weren't looking for the best, you shouldn't have titled your thread "looking for the BEST performance tire"

Well my bad, you know i'm such a newbie on these boards. I guess i should have jsut figured you guys would be ********.

I can get the nitto 555's locally through a car group i'm joining. I've been in a car with them when he was showing me his setup.

A cat decided to partake in the demonstration, allowing him to fully promote the stickiness of the tires from going 50 to 5mph in a very short period of time.

He also took a 10mph corner at 35 w/ no wheel screech. Of course, he also has an AWD car, but still!

You do not have to agree with the advice I or anyone else offer, but as the moderator of this forum I will insist you not use insulting language. Consider this your first warning.
