This weeks question from the Mod...

I thought it might be interesting and educational to have a Weekly Topic. The topic is stickied for a week and then replaced the following week. Old topics would of course not disappear but rather travel down the board as no new replies were posted.

I was thinking the topics would be along the lines of suspension tuning and handling. Links could be posted along with other web info and input from all our various contributors. In the end we would basically have a nifty FAQ on various topics that could always be found with a search.

What does everyone think?

Hmmmmm. What a resounding response.

It won't work without interested people to participate. Nobody else with feelings on this?

Good idea.

How about a review of all different kind of coilovers used, and their performance related to autocross.

Reza,

The only way to answer your question is by you actually testing these suspensions yourself. I don't believe you will ever get a satisfactory answer without testing them yourself. Good luck on your venture or quest for the perfect autox coilover.

Thumbs up

I like the idea

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drwaer when it comes to suspension, so any knowledge I can gain from those that are sharp is greatly appreciated.

Can the first topic be a discussion on the effects of railroad crossings on FD suspension parts?

Still too much trauma to discuss that one

Reza, I was thinking more along the lines of educating people on common suspension terms, adjustments and their effect, tires, vehicle dynamics, geometry etc. Nothing that dealt with particular products but rather an educational source for people to make their own decisions.

I completely agree with Damon. At least then everyone is coming from the same understanding of terminology. This way when we do explain the effects of certain suspension there is less misinterpretation involved. Only less. lol. Still a very relative decision. What you like or suits your driving style may not suit someone else's.

The first thing we shall all agree on is "brakes" vs. "breaks".

"Brakes" are what stop your car when you push the middle pedal.

"Breaks" is what happens when the brakes fail and you hit something hard.

I used to work with a girl who could have used your explanation!

She was pulling into her parking space in our underground garage, and she sneezed as she was pulling in. The sneeze caused her to hit the gas (instead of the "brakes"), and she slammed into the wall of the garage, causing both of the airbags in her 99 Accord to "break".

Try explaining that one to the insurance adjuster

So this weeks question is if you should ask questions weekly or not? Doesn't seem like a very informative question to me.

A weekly topic sounds like a good idea to me. It would be cool if they were moved to the archive and preserved to create a good library of info & links.

I agree with Max. It seems like you have enough support to go ahead and try this and see how it works out. So.......why don't you go ahead and start the first weekly topic.

Alright. We'll prefix each thread with "TWQ" for This Week's Question and I will sticky/unsticky each week. Search will be a breeze because looking for twq will get you all the threads that have been started.

The first one will be common suspension terms so everyone is on the same page. See the sticky at the top.

So far it's me, and me and me. If there is nobody interested in participating I may as well make a locked FAQ...

See the TWQ sticky at the top.

I was going to post, but it seems like you already covered most of the basic terms. I have a few pictures that cover camber, caster and toe. I'm not sure if they would help or not. If you want me to post them just let me know.

I also have some good info on tires. As in what do all of the different numbers on tires mean and how to understand them. I also have a good diagram on tire pressure showing what tires look like when they are underinflated, overinflated, and loaded correctly.

I think I have a good diagram explaining either wheel rate or spring rate. I will have to double check and make sure.

My second semester in Grad School is coming to a close and I have bee REALLY busy that is why I haven't posted on the TWQ. Well that along with the fact that I'm not sure I have anything useful to add or not.
