want to widen wheelbase

New member inquires:
Want to widen the stance on my 87 turbo. Need new tires and thought you guys might have some insight on wheel sizes that may be reversed approximately 1 inch and wider tires that will not interfere with stock fenders. Want to remain stock on the body. She is straight and just turned 100K so may refrain from V rated tires 'cause I am a lot nicer to her now and don't drive as fast. Any thoughts out there from past experience? Thanks

Increasing Track Width...

I think is what you mean not the wheel base...that's set--which is the distance between the front and rear tires. Increasing the track width can be done with aftermarket wheels that provide less offset, thus pushing the wheels outward. You have to be careful and take tire width into account when playing with offsets, because the tire will be the thing that contacts the fenderlip NOT the wheel rim. I don't know what the stock offsets are for the FC, so someone will need to chime in. The general rule of thumb is each 12 mm decrease in offset, pushes the wheel outward (away from the centerline) ~0.5 inches. If you want to increase your track width 1 inch you'll need to decrease your offset by 12 mm each side (left and right). As a concrete example, I'll use the FD (that's what I know). The stock offset for an FD wheel is 50 mm. To increase the track width by 0.5 inches each side (left and right), I'll need to decrease the offset 12 mm from 50 mm to 38 mm. This in turn pushes the wheel outward ~0.5 inches each side, thus increasing my track width ~1 inch. By applying this example to your FC, you should be able to come up with a similar solution

Thank you for the response, it was very informative. Will look at wheel width also and go from there.
