Toyo T1R or Kumho MX?

Trying to decide between the two. A lot of people like the old T1S and quite a few like the Kumho MX. Has anyone out there tried both?

Car is mostly used on street in all weather on all kinds of crappy roads with hopefully a few 1-5 HPDEs next year.

I had the T1S on my old e36 and liked them. They were quiet, good ride, excellent in wet, decent turn in and pretty communicative at the limit with good break away characteristics.

Input is appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm...I would be interested in this as well. I've heard T1R's have stiffer sidewalls than T1S's. I plan to get 2 for the rears, but haven't gotten them yet. Everyone that has had a chance to use the Kumho MX's have pretty much said that the turn-in response is slow, due to the softer sidewalls. Not sure how the Kumhos handle all weather stuff, but I know the Toyos should be great in the wet as well as dry. The old T1S's are, and the T1R are suppose to be better in every way.

something that i have noticed with the T1S, not sure if its a fluke, but they puncture pretty easy. i have had a screw in 2 different tires in the past 3 months. the screw was not deep inside the tire at all, but one caused a full airl leak almost instantly, and the other did when i removed it. i carry a tire plug kit around in the car with me now :/

maybe i just have bad luck driving through construction areas. go figure.

I had the T1-S on my old car. I really liked them, and I've been speaking with the owner of a local shop who has switched to the T1-Rs on his weekend toy S2000, and he says they're supposed to be slightly better in the rain, quieter, and have a higher limit in dry situations because of the new tread design.

The MX, on the other hand, is proven as a ridiculously good dry tire. They have mushy sidewalls, which is great for straight-line traction, but take some getting used to when you're taking corners (slightly less response). They're also known to be not as good in the rain, and when they start to wear down, drive home quickly when you hear thunder.

We have installed some T1R's on some 350z's at our shop because of the rear size(275/35-19) they offer. We have had to change out 3 tires on one customers car and two on another. 3 of the tires were hoppy and did not lay flat on the bead and the other two were causing a radial pull. This is out of only a total of 3 cars. Some were fronts and some were rears. As far as how the tires handle, I can not say. I haven't received any info back yet. I believe they are supposed to be quieter than the T1S and handle better as well. Just make sure you get them locally so you can exchange any if need be.

I drove MXs, followed by T1S back to back on my Supra, I like the MXs alot better, the MXs are far better straight line, and though they are a little slow to turnnin, theseem to have better ultimate grip in the corners. I am on the last legs of the T1S's , and waiting for the RT615s to be released in my size. So MX for now, RT615 would be my first choice if your size is available(not wear dependent), wear dependent, MX. This is on my Track ready BPU Supra. Carl

Thanks Carl. I didn't realize you had also driven on the T1S. I've read a few of your threads and you seem to have driven on every other tire known to man

If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by "far better straight line"?
Were the breakaway characteristics similar on both?

I don't mind giving up some ultimate grip for better turn in. I don't get to the track enough (so far anyway) that more grip would make that much of a difference. I do however dislike tires with slow turn in or that might make the steering feel slow.

Wear and price are a factor so the RT615 and Advan 048 are both out. Both of those tires do sound awesome...

Thanks again fellas.

I didn't see it above, but what size tires are you looking for. Maybe I can help. If it is stock size, I can get you the new Hankook rs-2. It is a 200 treadware, but grips like a 140 or less. It is Hankooks autocross/track/street tire, Similar to the Falken Azenis sport but better. There have already been some comparison test between the two and the RS-2 has come out on top. It grips better, doesn't go out when it gets hot like the Falken, and last longer. It really is a pretty impressive tire.

I move a lot of Hankook and can readily get them. They are also priced very reasonably. Sizes would be either 225/50-16 or 245/45-16. I have them in stock. Let me know what you think and you can PM me further.

Thanks. I'm looking for a set of four 255/40/17. I'll go do some googling on the Hankooks to see if I can find some reviews.

I believe he means that they have better traction for straight-line acceleration, which they should, as they have softer sidewalls. On a side note, the MXs have a lower treadwear rating than the T1S/R, but if you need straight-line traction, you should choose the MX, it's almost like a drag radial (well, not really, it can turn decently).

They do not make the rs2 in that size They do show a listing for the RSS Z211 which is a DOT R compund tire. 50 treadware. I can check on this if you are interested. This would be the shiznet.

I'm a little short on time, but in breif the MX has substantially better grip in every regard, and does not go away like a T1S at 1/2 tread, in fact they get better. No comparison IMHO. Carl

I have not driven on a T1S but with what I've heard I'm certain the MX is better. I replaced my first set of Kumho MX with a second set; I'm very happy with them. Grip in the rain and the dry is tremendous.

Interesting... Very good feedback/info.

Thanks for the clarification Carl.

DamonB, Reading your GEEZ(sp) thread I was starting to get the impression that you were getting frustrated with that tire. I guess that isn't the case.

Mike, Thanks but I'm not interested in an R spec tire.

My uses are 90% street with 10% track (hopefully).

Remember I run two different tires. I run the Kumho MX on the street and currently I run the Kumho V710 in competition. Both of them demanded some driving changes to get everything from them but both of them are excellent tires IMO.

I went from the MX in 225/50 to the T1-S in 245/45. The Toyos absolutely blow compared to the Kumho Ecsta MX. The turn in may be a little slow on the MX but on the Toyo the sidewalls are so soft that I feel likeI am driving a boat. I really regret buying these tires. I almost hate to drive the car on the street now. It feels kind of like walking on a mattress.

I guess you have to pick your trade offs. I'm leaning toward the Kumhos.

Thanks for the input fellas.

I replaced my two fronts with mx's and drove to a 12 hour autocross in orlando where i was just going to play on my street tires, dialed in a little camber in the front and took off. I have a decent stagger front to back, 225 / 255 but even with the difference the car didn't seem to push like I expected. Turn in seemed fine to me and grip was down right surpising. I'm considering doing 225 mx's all around once I wear out the rears (255 yoko avs100's)

The toyos are nice tires, but if your looking for autocross type grip with a little longer wear for the street, your not going to find a better tire than the mx. I'd say it's competition is azenis, as to where the toyo is more comparable to a potenza, which is a great tire, just not as focused as a mx.

In the August issue of GRM, they did a little autocross test between a couple of Max Performance tires and found that the Azenis RT-615 did better lap times than the MX. There are differences in how these tires behave on the track, so I guess one would have to read the article to know which tire is a good fit for them.

...and an RT-615 will have no where near the life of an MX.

Yeah, I read that article. Not very helpful to me since the test was really about autocross performance of the tires and they were all shaved. Some of the info was insightful in regards to behavior of the tire at the limit and communication to the driver.

I'm looking to run full tread tires using them 90% on the street in all kinds of weather and temps (except snow and ice) and 10% on track (as in road race).

I think I'm going with the Kumhos.

Thanks for the input all.

ive had my T1Rs on for about 2 months. They are a great tire. Really good handling is the dry, grips very well. Im at about 360-370whp and they hook up very well in 2nd with almost no slipping at full boost (14psi)

I rarely drive the car in the wet, and if I get stuck, I drive super easy so I cant tell you how they grip in the wet.

Edit: tires are 245/45/16 on stock wheels. These grip better than my 275s on Volks

I'm sure the toyos will be great in the rain. I beat on my old BMW in the rain a few times to test the performance of the T1S and it was impressive.

the toyos are excellent in the rain and dry. dont get me wrong i love them. but as stated the sidewall is softer. but i prefer that on a street car. and wear rating and price is also important to consider.
