You should be ok with 225/50/16's. You MAY have a SLIGHT bit of rubbing up front, but I think you'll be ok. That's what I'm gonna be running pretty soon, but I'll be on 16x8" rims, with 225/45/16's. I was told I MAY have rubbing up front, but I think you'll be ok. My car will be lowered too, so that might be why I'd have problems, and not you.

The stock white wheels are on Dunlop, the 87 TII wheels are on Michellin. Both fits perfect.
Was planning to buy a set of this size of RE71, didn't act fast enough, 225/50R16 are gone. Have to go back to 205/55R16 which is the stock size.

I have had two different 87 TIIs ... ran 225/50 16s on both... 1st one was perfect... no rubbing...etc.. 2nd one if I made a real hard U turn the front right would rub just a little bit... but that has only happened 3 times over about 30K miles ... so I'm sure you'll be fine...

Sidewall profiles differ from manufacturer to manufacturer - hell, they differ between different tire models by the SAME manufacturer.
225 is always going to be tight up front.  Some fit - some don't.
Be prepared to roll fenders if they don't.

On this same topic, how well do 245's work out back? Is any work required to get them to not rub? I heard a little grinding is required. Is this true? Oh yeah, this is on the stock TII 16's.
