Technical Advice Needed: Factory Brake Options

Hi guys,

I own a 1999 MAZDA RX-7 "TYPE R SPECIAL EDITION" - Series 8.

I have been to http://www.rx7.net.nz/newrx7.htm, it suggests that 99spec Type R and Type RS have different brake disc sizes.

Type RS Front: 314mm diameter 32mm thick
Type RS Rear: 314mm, 20mm.

Type R Front: 294mm, 22mm.
Type R Rear: 294mm, 20mm.

*Can someone provide me the sizes of the PRE-99spec Type RS brakes?

*I assume "Type R Special Edition" have the same sizes as the Type R, would it be a good upgrade to go to PRE-99spec Type RS brakes?

Cheers.

I want to know because there is a guy selling the Series 7 Type RS front brake discs and calipers. He says they are slightly over 310mm with 20mm thick (however, not the 32mm as in 99spec RS).

If that is accurate.. what I gain from the upgrade is just a bigger diameter rotor of the same thickness.. do you guys think it is worth while?

There's only two factory available brake packages, I know this 99 spec BS is propagated a lot on here, but the larger one was available from V III onward, so should be on a S7 RS, if, that is, what in fact he has.

The front rotors should be immediately apparent if you can inspect them.

Hey thanks for reply.

Not sure if I entirely agree tho.

1) S8 RS Front is 314mm, 32mm thick.
2) S8 R and RB Front is 294mm, 22mm thick
3) HIS S7 RS Front is said to be APPROX 310mm, 20mm thick. - but this is clearly bigger in diameter than S8 Type R.
4) Other S7 R or S6 might have even small brakes? like 294mm, 20mm.

Let alone S8 RZ or Spirit R.

Anyways. Is it worthwhile changing from 294 22 to 310 22? haha or rather get some bigger S8 RS brakes if I can wait?

Cheers

Mazda Comp calls the RS brakes as RS/RZ 314 mm x 32mm front so they are one and the same.

Has anyboby proven that the Spirit R brakes are any different than RS/RZ's, other than color.

The later brakes (whatever series/model they came on) are indeed 314mm. Fronts are thicker than the rears.

More specs here:
https://www.rx7club.com/suspension-wheels-tires-brakes-archive-112/2002-rx-7-spirit-r-brakes-218468/

I had been running them on my car for years. The Spirit Rs are just prettier.
