Steering shaft before u joint knocking

I've never taken apart the steering wheel to the first ujoint I'm getting a knocking in that section very minimal but enough to wind me up feels like the steering wheel bolt is loose
before you guys ask I've already replaced both the joints assuming it was that,
My question is, the steering wheel bolt is solid is there anything in that shaft that can cause the knocking ? As it only does it when under a bit of load I can hold the uj off the steering rack and can feel it knocking, hope that's enough info,

Nothing can really cause any play in there, upper and lower bearings will last forever in one of these, so can discount that, there is a circlip up top securing it fore and aft though. Inside, a solid 19mm shaft with two flats, slides into the upper receiver of the collapsible column and that would take something extreme to develop any slop.

That upper uni is where I'd concentrate my efforts, if it's sloppy winding back and forth, replacing that with a second-hand one.......if that's the case, mightn't give good results. Under the rubber boot (iirc?), there's a the pin securing it to a hollow shaft, it's a poor design for longevity and often flogged out.
