Are SSR Competitions safe for street use?

I know these are light in weight. I just wanted to make sure these would be safe for the ocassional pot hole. I can't afford to replace them over and over again if they will bend. TIA

I bent a front SSR comp wheel when hitting some curbing on a track. This curbing was poorly maintained as it had a steep jagged leading edge as opposed to the normal gentle ramping edge you would expect to find on a track.

I know there were other cars hitting it and not bending their wheels. However, speed, suspension compliance and tire type are also big factors. The jolt was real strong so I knew I had bent a wheel or worse. I was actually relieved when I found that I did not also blow a tire.

Fortunately, I have not experienced a jolt like that on the street. However, I am sure that a good hit on a nasty pot hole will bend an SSR comp wheel. At least they are quick and relatively inexpensive to replace.

So if it means anything, it takes a really hard jolt to bend an SSR comp. Moderate jolts have not bent my wheels.

I would be curious to know if anyone thinks Volk wheels are any stronger.

I know the SSR rims from the old days like the original GP0 were nice and very light but would bend fairly easily compared to some other brands so it wouldn't entirely surprise me if the SSR comps were still the same way. Not sure that Volk wheels are all that much stronger since a friend of mine bent his AV3s before also... I currently have Volk GT-C and have had pretty good luck against potholes (knock on wood) but I think more than the wheel itself, it just depends on the pot hole u run over. Any rim will bend if you hit a pothole just right (or wrong)...

Hmmm...I have a bad habit of running over curbs at track events. Luckily I haven't bent one of my SSR Comp front wheels yet. FWIW, I run taller sidewalled Hoosiers (245/45-17 on 8.5 x 17 fronts), so perhaps that extra cushioning is saving my Comp wheels from bending?

I debated long and hard about whether to run the Comps on the road. Being in Indiana where the roads are not in the best shape, I opted to dedicate the Comps to road racing use only. That's not to say that Comps couldn't handle road use, though. Like BBQ posted above...it just depends on the chuckhole you run over, and how bad of an impact you have with the hole!

If you do opt to run the Comps on the public roads, I suggest choosing a 17-inch fitment over the 18-inchers to provide more tire sidewall cushioning!

Thanks for the responses. For the most part, Georgia roads are pretty smooth and cared for well. A lot better than the northern states I have traveled through. I think I'm going to risk using them on the street. Wish me luck.

I think you should run a 17x8.5 in front with the +42 offset. That's what I have.

It may be better to run a wider front tire like a 245-40-17. That will keep your car more neutral with that wide 265 in the back. Also a tall high profile 235-45-17 might look strange with that thin low profile 265-35-18 in the back.

I dont know what ofsets are available for 18" SSR comps but you want at least +42. (Again thats what I have except with 17's) Lower offsets than that will bring your tire too close to the fender lip.

7 in 7, why are you going with 17s up front and 18s in back?

I also have 8.5 fr and 9.5 rr x 17s, with 42-mm offsets. The setup works beautifully.

I don't recommend 18s with SSR Comps if you're strictly running on the public roads! You'll be prone to bending the 18s quite easily...

18s on a smooth clean track...is a different story...

7 & 7, evryone knows who to go to for wheels???? RISHIE (ARD2). I believe he is the one how supplied most guys on the forum with the SSR Comp wheels.. I just bought a set of Comp wheels 17/8.5 and 17/9.5 adding 245/40 fronts and 265/40 rears. They will be on the car in about 1 week if you want pics. I am pretty sure Rishie will beat the prices from the tire rack of $410 (17/9.5) and $389 (17/8.5) and you can also get a deal on somes tires too!!

My friend has been running his SSR Comps on his m3 for about 2 months now in CA.

He daily drives the car in SJ and on I5 in the valley alot without any problems.
They are the stock E36 size wheels and sidewalls with a little wider rubber.
