I was looking through some light but still decent looking wheels for my '90 TurboII, and I came across the SSR Competition wheels. They're really light and I believed one-piece forged. However I heard from someone (who said he heard from other people) that they break easily. Now, I don't want something that's $1000 per wheel, but I want it to be strong and light.

Basically, what are the experiences with these things? They're really light wheels, and they sell for like $325 for 16x7.5 on tirerack. I'd rather get my tires from them because I get them through my business.

My other choice is Volk TE 37, I'd like to get 16x8 if possible. Only problem is finding these for a decent price.

Basically I want something that isn't TOO expensive and won't easily break (hopefully they don't just BREAK break), bend, or dent, and is still light.

The jury's still out on the roadworthiness of SSR Comps. I'm using mine for track-only, but might convert them to road use next season...

IMHO, you should contact ARD T2 (Rishie) for your Volk Racing wheel needs.

how much does he sell them for? I'd still love to get more info on the SSR Competitions, they're real light..

No problems with my comps! I guess if you drive crazy and dont watch out for the pot holes you could loose one. I have fit some pretty good bumbs with no probs yet. Mike

You are our test case! Glad to read that your Comps have been fine!

I plan to go with 235/45-17 and 255/40-17 Bridgestone Potenza S-03s for the 8.5 fr and 9.5 rr x 17, 42-mm offset Comps when I wear out the Hoosiers this season.

Interestingly, I may convert the 9 x 17, 45-mm offset SSR Integral A2s and switch race tires to 255/40-17 Michelins Pilot Sport Comps all the way around. I've been reading some great reviews of "weekend" open-trackers who've used the Pilot Sport Comps...they say they have 95% of Hoosier R3S03's stick, consistently over the Pilot Sport's life--which is apparently double that of a Hoosier R3S03! Also, you can drive on public roads with the Pilot Sport Comps, where Hoosiers just aren't usable on the public roads.

I'm looking at other race tire options, as Hoosier Racing Tire is rumored to be raising their prices to ridiculous levels based on the new DOT requirements for tires, which Hoosier MUST MEET to stamp their R3S03 and A3S03 as DOT approved.

are we talking about the same thing here? I think you're thinking of competition tires.. we're talking about SSR Competition wheels.

But SK8, thanks for the info. Is there anyone else out there who has good or bad experiences?

we are. I have a set of 8.5 x 17 and 9.5 x 17 SSR Competitions that I'm using for track use only. My SSR Competitions currently have 245/45-17 and 275/40-17 Hoosier R3S03s on them, so I have not had the chance to use the Comps/Hoosiers on the public roads.

I'm thinking of mounting road tires on the SSR Comps once the Hoosier wear out, and using my current road wheels, SSR Integral A2s for road AND track use. My current road wheels have 255/40-17 Yokohama AVS Intermediates on them. I was thinking of burning those up, and mounting Michelin Pilot Sport Competitions on the SSR Integral A2s for road AND track use...

I also have had no problems with my Comps! I have several thousand miles on them, with no problems what so ever. I have Michelin MXX-3's wrapped around them, which seem to have very stiff sidewalls, which may help.
