Spring rates?

Can someone confirm what the stock spring rates are for the FD? I have 268 lbs for the front and 201 lbs for the rear in my notes, but I did not write where the source for this info is from. (or whether it is correct). I did a search but did not find what I wanted.

I am going to switch from my current 575lb front 325lb rear to something a little more streetable, since my autoX plans have pretty much fizzled. Besides, I am getting tired of the CD player skipping every time I hit a pavement joint.

You buy/install different springs with different rates.

interesting how things filter around....

i had a Longacre Digital spring rate tester and checked over 30 FD springs. based on my readings and taking an average i came up w.... 263 and 195.

if you want something you will really enjoy driving both from a performance and comfort aspect go w the Eibach Pro Kit. they are 350/255. i recommend the stock shocks as they work well w that rate.

Thanks for the advice. Being a relatively cheap SOB, I will probably re-use the 325 lb springs I have on the back and move them to the front and buy a set of 250 lb Hypercoils to use in the back. I already have Konis that have been re-valved for bump and rebound, so I will put them back on, after I have about 1.5 inch shortened on the rod.

I am still trying to get the almost perfect "feel" that my GTUs came with from the factory. I have had three FC and one FD and the GTUs felt like driving a good handling go kart.

you'll want ride height at 25 inches at the top of the wheel well ideally front and rear. low is fast.

FSM quotes 270# front, 193# rear.

I measured my old stock springs once for fun. It may interest you:

"ride height at 25 inches at the top of the wheel well"
I used the screw holes on the side marker lights to measure the initial ride height. I will have to see how those measurements convert to the fenderwell distance. I know I am not as low as I want to go yet, but I can not turn the adjustment any more or I will have no load at all on the springs when the car is jacked up. I suspect the guy I bought this setup from on ebay sold it for this reason, but they can be cut down about two inches, if necessary.

After seeing Damon's post, I decided to look at my 94 FSM. I don't know where Damon found the spring rates. I looked at the suspension specs, and didn't see anything. Perhaps it isn't listed in the 94 FSM.

I did find something very surprising!!! On page R4 (suspension specs), it lists 2 different front coil springs. One has a wire diameter of 12.3mm . The other has a wire diameter of 12.5mm. Free lengths of the coils are also different. 270.0mm & 276.3mm. The rear springs seem to be the same for all cars. It appears that the R2 got the longer springs with thicker wire. This would account for a variation in spring rates on different cars. It looks like the 94 R2's didn't just get stiffer shocks.

If anyone doubts this, there is a 94 FSM that has been downloaded in the 3rd gen section.

I found this:

http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/rbsoringsfd.htm

260/212 divide out the 7% comes to 243/198. Close enough, I guess.

Since I was curious about this, I called Ray Crowe (Malloy Mazda) to check.

He said that there are 2 different part numbers for front 94 springs:

#FD 01 34011 for the R2 $86.38 each
#FD 17 34011 for the other models $103.13 each

He didn't have spring the rates for either spring. Who says all springs are created equal?
