Somebody shoot me next time I try to do suspension work!
OK, so I get a set of shocks and springs and figure it seems simple enough that I could do it myself. And through both fronts and the driver's side rear, that was true...pain in the butt at times, but not very complicated. Then comes the right side rear. I could NOT get that lower shock mount nut off...the one that goes on the stud that is part of the rear stabilizer control link. I actually cracked three Craftsman sockets trying to do it the conventional way before giving up and attacking it with a variety of weapons...dremel tool, pipe wrench, 105mm howitzer...nothing worked. I now have the most godawful looking nut you've ever seen....but it still has a death grip on the stud. Then, to add insult to injury, I think I stripped the threads on the other control link stud, the one that attaches to the stabilizer...now I can't get that nut to tighten down. I think I'm going to have to cut the thing out and will undoubtedly trash the control link. I hope they're not rare or expensive!
Is this a common problem, or am I just lucky that way?

I had that nut stuck on one side. I tried, heat, cold, penetrating oil, a manual impact wrench, an electric impact wrench, then finally gave up and cut the nut with a dremel. cutting the nut & stud didn't matter to me because I was installing a new rear swaybar and end links at the same time.
OC's right though-- gotta get some air tools. I'm sure that an air-driven impact wrench would have taken it off. I just didn't want to shell out the $$ at the time for those tools...

Yeah, you're probably right about the air tools. Actually, I did try a neighbor's portable "air chisel" or whatever it is...that's what it looked like. But by then, it was probably too far gone anyway.

Yeah it's a bit of a PITA, I did it last week...
That lower mount is a bitch. I soaked the bolts in PB Laster (liquid wrench) for about an hour beforehand, then used a 5 foot long breaker bar slipped over my Craftsman 3/8" drive rachet...sucker came right off. A good $5 investment...

I actually cracked 3 of those Craftsman sockets! They're going to freak when I bring them in to get replacements.
